The footage was worse than Elena remembered.
That was what Mara told her later.

The video showed Dominic standing beside the stove.
It showed Elena stepping back with both hands raised.
It showed Victoria seated at the dining table, already irritated.
It showed Arthur looking toward the window.
It showed Dominic saying, “You ruined dinner.”
Elena saying, “I’m sorry, I can fix it.”
Dominic lifting the pan.
Elena turning away.
The hot metal hitting her arm.
Her scream.
Victoria standing, not to help, but to close the kitchen door.
Arthur rising halfway, then sitting back down.

Mara called 911 before the pan hit the sink.
She had been waiting for the alert because Elena had warned her that dinner felt dangerous.
The police arrived twelve minutes later.
Twelve minutes can be an entire lifetime in a house like that.
After the burn, Dominic wrapped Elena’s arm in a towel.
Not gently.
Not to help.
To hide it.
Victoria poured herself more wine.
Arthur whispered, “Maybe we should take her to urgent care.”
Dominic turned on him.
“She slipped.”
Elena sat on the sofa, shaking.
Victoria walked over and crouched in front of her.
Her voice was low and smooth.
“Elena, listen to me.”
“This family does not invite police into private pain.”
Elena looked at the woman who had watched her son burn her.
“Private pain?”
Victoria’s face hardened.
“You do not want to ruin his career over one emotional moment.”
One emotional moment.
Elena almost laughed.
Instead, she heard sirens.
Dominic heard them too.
His head snapped toward the window.
Victoria turned pale.
Arthur closed his eyes.
Elena lifted her burned arm and finally let the towel fall.
When officers knocked, Dominic tried to answer the door with a calm smile.
