Chapter 1 - THE RED LIGHT INSIDE THE TEDDY BEARAt 2:17 a.m., Sophia Vale heard the bedroom door open.

She kept her breathing slow and her eyes closed.

Soft footsteps crossed the antique rug. A shadow passed through the moonlight spilling between the curtains, then stopped beside her bed.

Robert Vale leaned over her.

Sophia had lived in his Beverly Hills mansion since childhood. He called himself her guardian, though he never explained why every school photograph, medical file, and passport application required his personal approval.

His fingers lifted her hair from her shoulder.

Then he touched the crescent-shaped scar beneath her collarbone.

“You still have it.”

Sophia’s stomach tightened.

Across the room, the teddy bear Julie had placed on the dresser faced the bed. Behind one glass eye, a tiny red camera light blinked.

Robert did not notice.

The door opened again.

A nervous nurse entered carrying a syringe and a folder of transfer papers. Sophia recognized her as Miriam Cross, the private nurse assigned to Claire Ashford’s room in the mansion’s sealed east wing.

Miriam looked toward Sophia.

“If her mother wakes fully, she’ll expose everything.”

Robert placed the documents beside Sophia’s sleeping hand.

“Claire will not wake fully.”

“And the girl?”

“She’ll be moved before sunrise.”

Sophia felt the mattress shift as Robert reached for the Virgin Mary locket around her neck.

The necklace had belonged to her since infancy. Robert had repeatedly tried to confiscate it, claiming the clasp was unsafe. Sophia always hid it afterward.

This time, he tore it free.

The chain snapped against her skin.

Robert opened the locket and pressed his thumbnail beneath the miniature portrait inside. A hidden compartment lifted.

A tiny yellow note fell into his palm.

He unfolded it.

His arrogance vanished.

“The true heiress never died.”

Miriam stepped backward.

“That note was destroyed.”

Robert turned toward her.

“You told me it was destroyed.”

Sophia’s eyes snapped open.

She sat upright, reached beneath the bed, and grabbed the black smartphone connected to the teddy-bear camera.

The screen showed a live recording indicator.

She aimed it directly at Robert, Miriam, and the syringe.

“My name isn’t Sophia, is it?”

Robert’s fear became fury.

He seized the phone, but Sophia rolled from the opposite side of the bed and ran toward the door.

Before she reached it, violent pounding shook the mansion’s front entrance.

“Beverly Hills Police! Open the door!”

Miriam dropped the syringe.

Robert grabbed Sophia’s wrist.

The bedroom door swung inward.

Claire Ashford stood in the dark hallway wearing a hospital gown. Her silver-blond hair hung loose around her face, and an antique pistol rested beside her leg.

Sophia had seen Claire only through the east-wing windows. Robert said she was a delusional widow who believed every young woman was her missing daughter.

Claire looked directly at Sophia.

“Daughter…”

Robert moved between them.

“You’re confused, Claire.”

Her hand tightened around the pistol, though she kept the barrel pointed at the floor.

“No.”

Her eyes shifted from Robert to Miriam.

“He wasn’t the one who stole you.”

No one moved.

Downstairs, wood splintered as police forced the front door.

The yellow note slipped from Robert’s hand and landed face down on the carpet. A second family photograph unfolded from behind it.

Two newborn girls lay beneath the same hospital blanket.

Both wore lockets.

Both had crescent marks on their shoulders.

And someone unseen was approaching Claire from the staircase behind her.

👉 Claire had named Robert’s accomplice—but the hidden photograph suggested Sophia was not the only stolen daughter.
