Chapter 6 - THE DAUGHTER CLAIRE CHOSEClaire did not deny the recording.

She asked to explain it without Robert interrupting.

Sophia refused to sit.

Julie remained near the door, her locket clenched inside her fist.

After the hospital chaos, Claire regained consciousness long enough to see Robert holding one infant and Celeste holding the other.

Robert demanded that Claire identify her biological daughter.

If she chose correctly, he promised to protect the child and expose Celeste.

If she refused, he threatened to report both women for infant fraud and place both babies under court custody.

Claire looked at the two newborns.

One wore the original hospital bracelet.

The other wore a copied bracelet.

Both carried crescent marks.

Celeste had made identification nearly impossible.

“I chose the baby in Robert’s arms,” Claire whispered.

Sophia’s breath caught.

“Me?”

“I believed so.”

Robert took that infant away.

Celeste escaped with the other.

Later, Robert told Claire the chosen baby died during transfer and Celeste’s child vanished.

Claire was institutionalized after accusing him publicly.

For years, she believed she had chosen wrong.

When she saw Sophia inside the mansion at age seven, she recognized the locket but not the child.

Robert told staff Claire’s reaction proved her delusions.

“You knew I was here for seventeen years,” Sophia said.

“I tried to reach you.”

“You watched from windows.”

“They sedated me whenever I spoke your name.”

“You could have written.”

“Robert searched everything.”

Julie stepped forward.

“You could have spoken to me.”

Claire stared.

“I did not know who you were.”

“You saw my locket.”

“Only tonight.”

Julie laughed bitterly.

Miriam had placed Julie inside the mansion six months earlier as a junior archivist. Robert promoted her to Sophia’s assistant after noticing their similar features.

He thought the resemblance would make Sophia easier to monitor.

Claire saw Julie only from a distance.

“Why did you whisper that you chose the other one?” Sophia asked.

“Because I still don’t know which child I chose.”

Claire had spent decades imagining one daughter protected and the other abandoned.

Seeing Sophia and Julie together destroyed even that fragile belief.

Miriam asked to speak.

At the hospital, after Claire identified the infant in Robert’s arms, Miriam had secretly switched the babies.

Robert believed he took Claire’s child.

Celeste believed she escaped with her own.

Miriam exchanged them because Celeste threatened to kill the lawful heiress rather than let Robert control the trust.

“You switched us?” Sophia said.

“I thought I was saving Claire’s daughter.”

“Which one?”

“I don’t know anymore.”

Miriam’s confession exposed the final collapse of certainty.

Claire chose one infant.

Miriam reversed the choice.

Celeste copied the scars.

Robert changed the records.

Every adult acted alone while believing only they understood the danger.

Julie opened the old case file.

A small envelope had been taped beneath the back cover. It contained two dried blood cards labeled Baby A and Baby B.

Independent DNA could finally establish which infant belonged to which woman—if the labels remained accurate.

Robert smiled from the hallway.

“They aren’t.”

Officer Ortiz turned toward him.

Robert explained that Celeste switched the cards before leaving the hospital.

“How do you know?” Claire asked.

“Because she sent me one twenty years later.”

He had hidden the newer sample inside the antique pistol’s grip.

Police opened the wooden handle.

A folded laboratory strip fell out.

The name printed across it was:

CELESTE ASHFORD—ACTIVE PATIENT, HAWTHORNE INSTITUTE.

Celeste was not dead.

She was living inside the same institution where Robert planned to send Sophia before sunrise.

👉 The woman who began the identity switch had been alive under medical confinement while Robert controlled every story told about her.
