Chapter 5 - CLAIRE’S FIRST LIEClaire asked the police to remove Robert and Miriam from the library.

Then she asked Julie to stay.

“You knew there were two babies,” Sophia said.

Claire’s eyes filled.

“I knew there could be.”

That distinction changed everything.

During the final months of her pregnancy, Celeste revealed that she was pregnant too. The sisters had conceived within weeks of each other.

Claire’s husband, Thomas Ashford, had died in a plane crash before learning she was pregnant.

Celeste refused to identify her child’s father.

She proposed a plan.

If both babies were girls, they would be presented as twins born to Claire. That would protect Celeste’s child from the trust’s exclusion and prevent Robert from controlling either girl separately.

“You agreed?” Julie asked.

“I was afraid Celeste’s baby would disappear into one of our father’s private arrangements.”

“So you helped falsify the births.”

“Yes.”

Sophia stepped backward.

Claire had not been merely a victim.

She had helped create the confusion that later erased both daughters.

The plan collapsed during labor.

Celeste entered the hospital earlier than expected, already carrying her newborn. She switched bracelets, entered Claire’s room, and placed the second baby beside the first.

Claire remembered waking briefly.

Two infants lay near her.

Celeste whispered:

“Now no one can separate them.”

Then Robert entered.

He saw Celeste.

He saw both babies.

And he called hospital security.

“What happened after that?” Sophia asked.

Claire’s hands shook.

“I told Celeste to run.”

“With which child?”

“I don’t remember.”

“You expect us to believe that?”

“I had been sedated.”

Julie’s voice was colder.

“You remember telling her to run.”

“Yes.”

“You remember two babies.”

“Yes.”

“But not which one she took?”

Claire looked toward the antique pistol resting inside an evidence bag.

“The gun belonged to our father. Celeste threatened Robert with it in the hospital.”

Robert had concealed the weapon for decades because fingerprints on it proved Celeste survived the alleged boating accident.

Claire had stolen it from his study earlier that night before leaving the east wing.

She did not come to shoot him.

She came to force the truth into the open.

Sophia placed the tiny yellow note beside Claire.

“Who wrote this?”

Claire touched the paper.

“Celeste.”

“How do you know?”

“She always crossed the letter T twice.”

The note had been hidden inside Sophia’s locket.

Celeste must have placed it there before Robert recovered her.

The line about the true heiress carried a second meaning.

One girl belonged to Claire, the lawful Ashford heir.

The other belonged to Celeste, whose branch had been cut from the trust.

Robert had spent twenty-four years assuming Sophia was Claire’s child because of the scar.

But the scar appeared on both young women.

It was not a natural birthmark.

Miriam admitted a hospital clamp caused one infant’s crescent injury.

The second scar had been deliberately copied.

“Who copied it?” Ortiz asked.

Miriam looked toward Claire.

Claire went pale.

Celeste had marked her own child to make the girls indistinguishable.

That act ensured no one could prove which baby carried the inheritance.

Sophia’s phone vibrated.

The teddy-bear camera had uploaded an earlier recording.

At 1:43 a.m., before Robert entered the bedroom, Claire had stood beside Sophia’s bed.

She lifted Sophia’s hair.

Touched the crescent scar.

Then whispered:

“I’m sorry I chose the other one.”

Sophia turned toward her.

“What did you mean?”

May you like

Claire’s face collapsed.

👉 Claire had accused everyone else of stealing her daughter, but the hidden camera recorded her admitting she once chose between the two girls.
