Chapter 4 - THE DNA THAT ANSWERED TOO LITTLEEmergency DNA testing confirmed that Sophia and Julie were biological sisters.

Both were closely related to Claire.

The hospital geneticist warned that the result did not establish which woman in the old photograph had given birth to them.

Claire’s identical twin shared nearly the same nuclear DNA.

“What was her name?” Sophia asked.

Claire sat inside the mansion library beneath a blanket provided by paramedics.

“Celeste Ashford.”

Robert looked toward the fireplace.

The name carried more fear than guilt.

Official family records claimed Celeste died in a boating accident at nineteen, six years before the twins were born.

Claire said the accident was staged.

Celeste had discovered that their father’s estate plan named only one future granddaughter as heir. If Claire had a daughter, Celeste’s branch would receive nothing.

“She hated the trust,” Claire said.

“She hated our father for turning us into competing bloodlines.”

“Did she hate you?” Julie asked.

Claire looked at her.

“Sometimes.”

Celeste resurfaced during Claire’s pregnancy. She claimed she wanted reconciliation and protection from Robert, who had recently become the family attorney.

Robert objected to her presence but kept it secret to avoid scandal.

Then Claire went into labor early.

The hospital chart documented one infant.

The private file documented two.

Claire remembered hearing two cries before a mask covered her face.

“When I woke, Robert said the baby died.”

“Both babies?” Sophia asked.

“He said there had only been one.”

Miriam sat under police guard near the doorway.

She admitted that Celeste entered the maternity ward wearing Claire’s identification bracelet and hospital gown. Because the sisters were identical, staff assumed Claire had briefly left recovery.

Celeste presented a physician-signed transfer order.

Miriam carried one newborn through the service corridor.

“What about the second baby?” Ortiz asked.

“I never saw her.”

Robert laughed harshly.

“You carried both.”

“No.”

“You delivered one to Celeste and one to me.”

Miriam stared at him.

“I handed you an infant six months later.”

Robert told his version.

After the disappearance, he followed payments from the Ashford trust to a hidden residence in Santa Barbara. He found Celeste there with one baby.

Sophia.

Celeste claimed the other infant had died.

Robert took Sophia, but instead of returning her to Claire, he created a new identity and raised her under private guardianship.

“You stole me again,” Sophia said.

“I saved you.”

“You erased my name.”

“Claire was confined. Celeste was dangerous. The trust would have turned you into a target.”

“So you controlled it for me?”

Robert did not answer.

He had spent twenty-four years collecting trustee fees, selling Ashford properties, and using Sophia’s presumed death to prevent outside review.

Julie asked where she had been found.

Miriam finally looked at her.

“With me.”

The nurse had raised Julie under her sister’s surname, pretending the child belonged to a relative who died after childbirth.

“You were my aunt Miriam,” Julie whispered.

“I was trying to keep you hidden.”

“From Robert?”

“From everyone.”

Julie’s anger sharpened.

“You let me work inside this house.”

“I needed you near Sophia before the trust activated.”

“You used me to investigate him.”

“I thought the truth would be safer if you found it yourself.”

Sophia heard the familiar pattern.

Every adult had manipulated a child or young woman in the name of protection.

Claire reached for both daughters.

Sophia moved closer.

Julie did not.

The geneticist entered with another result.

Sophia and Julie were sisters, but not identical twins.

One shared slightly more inherited markers with Claire’s recorded medical samples.

The difference was too small for certainty because Celeste’s DNA was unavailable.

However, the mitochondrial profiles were different.

The sisters could not have been born from the same biological mother.

Claire stared at the report.

“That’s impossible.”

One girl was Claire’s daughter.

The other was Celeste’s.

And because the sisters’ fathers also appeared genetically related, the family had deliberately created records designed to make them look like twins.

👉 Sophia and Julie shared a childhood conspiracy, but only one of them was Claire’s biological daughter.
