Chapter 3 - THE TRANSFER BEFORE SUNRISEPolice separated everyone.

Sophia remained in the bedroom with Officer Ortiz while medical personnel examined Claire. The older woman resisted until Sophia asked her to cooperate.
“I’m not leaving,” Claire promised.
Robert heard from the hallway.
“You made that promise once before.”
Claire flinched.
Sophia noticed.
Robert knew something about the night of the disappearance that Claire still feared.
Julie sat beside the dresser, her hands trembling.
“Why didn’t you tell me about the camera?”
“Because Robert reads your messages.”
“He reads everything?”
“Your phone backups. Your medical portal. Even the security reports from your car.”
Julie had discovered the surveillance three months earlier after Robert ordered her to replace Sophia’s smartphone. Instead, she duplicated the data and began searching his study.
The teddy bear camera had recorded seven nighttime visits.
Robert entered Sophia’s bedroom at 2:17 every Thursday.
Sometimes he checked the crescent scar.
Sometimes he photographed the locket.
Twice he held a medical scanner near her face.
“He was confirming your identity,” Julie said.
“For what?”
“The trust activation.”
The Ashford trust did not simply release money on Isabella’s twenty-fifth birthday. It required a live biometric confirmation tied to a childhood medical record.
The crescent scar had been documented at birth.
Sophia was the only person Robert knew who carried it.
“He needed you alive,” Julie said, “but legally unable to claim anything.”
The transfer papers named Robert as emergency guardian and placed all future trust decisions under his authority.
Claire’s awakening threatened that arrangement.
Miriam had recently reduced the sedatives she administered to Claire. The nurse claimed guilt had finally become stronger than fear.
Robert discovered the change.
That was why both women were being moved before sunrise.
Sophia to Hawthorne.
Claire to an unnamed facility in Nevada.
Officer Ortiz examined the black smartphone.
A message had arrived at 1:58 a.m. from an unknown number:
The bear is active. Move both women now.
Someone besides Robert knew about Julie’s camera.
Julie denied sending the warning.
Miriam denied it too.
The mansion’s secured network showed the message had originated inside the house.
Police searched the bedrooms, offices, kitchen, and basement.
No unknown person appeared on the cameras.
Then they checked the east-wing hallway.
A section of footage had been replaced with a loop.
Someone had moved between Claire’s room and Sophia’s bedroom without being recorded.
Ortiz opened the old case file.
Most pages had been removed, but one surviving report documented two infants born during Claire’s emergency delivery.
Baby A was recorded as Isabella Ashford.
Baby B had no name.
The second record was crossed out in red ink.
Sophia stared at Julie.
“The photograph showed two babies.”
Julie looked down.
“I know.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I found the file tonight.”
“That isn’t the whole answer.”
Julie removed the Virgin Mary locket from beneath her own shirt.
It was identical to Sophia’s.
The same engraved initials appeared on the back.
C.A.
Claire Ashford.
Sophia could not speak.
Julie unclasped the necklace and turned her shoulder toward the light.
Beneath her hair was a pale crescent scar.
Claire saw it from across the room and began screaming.
“My babies.”
Robert lunged toward Julie.
Police forced him against the wall.
He shouted not at Claire, but at Miriam.
“You told me the second one died!”
Miriam sank to the floor.
“I was told she did.”
Julie stared at Sophia.
They were the same age.
They shared the same locket.
The same scar.

And neither had known the other existed before Robert’s sealed file brought them together.
👉 Sophia’s hidden inheritance had become a twin mystery—and Robert had been controlling only one of Claire’s stolen daughters.
