PART 1
“He told his pregnant wife no one was coming to save her… then the power cut out and her ex-Marine brother walked in.”
Trent Maddox stood over his pregnant wife with a wooden bat hanging from one hand and a smile that did not belong in a home.
Maya sat on the living room rug with one hand wrapped around her swollen belly and the other near the shattered pieces of her phone.
The luxury high-rise apartment glowed with dawn light through floor-to-ceiling windows.
A spilled glass lay beside the couch.
Dark stains marked the cream rug.
On the couch, Trent’s mother, Helen, watched with cruel excitement.
His father, Richard, sat beside her with a satisfied smirk, as if this was discipline instead of danger.
Trent leaned down.
“No one is coming to save you.”
Maya’s breath shook.
Her face was pale.
Her body hurt.
But her eyes moved to the broken phone near her fingers.
The screen was cracked.
The case was bent.
But before Trent smashed it, she had pressed the emergency shortcut.
Three taps.
One silent SOS.
One location share.
One message to the only person Trent truly feared.
Maya looked up at her husband.
“You’re wrong.”
Helen shot to her feet.
Her voice was sharp and ugly.
“Hit her again!”
Then the apartment lights went out.
Everything died at once.
The chandelier.
The television.
The soft kitchen lights.
The security panel near the door.
For one breath, the room became black.
Then the front door burst open.
A flashlight beam cut across Trent’s face.
A man in a dark tactical jacket stepped into the apartment like the storm had finally found its target.
Maya’s brother, Luke Carter.
Former Marine.
The man Trent had spent years convincing Maya she did not need.
Luke’s voice was low and deadly calm.
“Drop it.”
“Now.”
Trent froze.
Helen’s face collapsed.
Richard stopped smiling.
Maya looked up through tears.
“I sent the SOS before you smashed the phone.”
Luke stepped between her and Trent.
