Luke did not call Maya back.
That was the first thing that made the rescue work.
A panicked brother might have dialed.
A trained brother moved.
He played the audio once while grabbing his jacket.
Maya’s breathing.
Trent shouting.
Helen’s voice saying, “She needs to learn who owns this family.”
Then Maya crying out.
Luke’s face became very still.
He called 911 from his truck.
“My pregnant sister is in immediate danger.”
He gave the address.
The floor.
The apartment number.
The building access layout from memory.
The dispatcher asked if he was going there.
“Yes.”
“Sir, officers are on the way.”
“Good.”
“I will be there first.”
He did not say it like a threat.
He said it like a fact.
Then he called a friend who worked building security at a neighboring tower.
“I need the emergency power shutoff procedure for Maddox Tower.”
His friend hesitated.
“Luke, what is happening?”
“My sister is trapped.”
The friend gave him the information.
Luke did not cut power to the entire building.
He cut the private apartment breaker from the service room after the doorman, hearing the 911 call on speaker, let him through.
By then, the police were three minutes out.
Three minutes can be a lifetime when someone is holding a weapon.
Luke took the stairs.
Thirty-two floors.
He did not feel his legs.
He only heard Maya’s voice from the recorded audio.
You’re wrong.
When he reached the hallway, two neighbors were standing outside their doors.
One woman was crying.
A man whispered, “We heard shouting.”
Luke looked at him.
“Then say that to the police.”
He moved to the door.
The electronic lock was dark from the power cut.
But Luke had already grabbed the emergency master override from the security box.
He opened the door at the exact moment Helen screamed, “Hit her again!”
The room dropped into darkness.
Luke entered with the flashlight high and one hand ready.
Trent turned.
The bat stayed in his hand.
Luke’s voice did not rise.
“Drop it.”
“Now.”
Trent looked past him toward the hallway.
Police sirens echoed below.
