PART 4

Trent tried to laugh.

That was his last attempt at control.

He looked at Luke and forced a smile.

“You’re breaking into my home.”

Luke did not look away from the bat.

“You are standing over my pregnant sister.”

Helen snapped, “She is his wife.”

Luke’s eyes moved to her.

“That makes this worse.”

Richard stood slowly.

“Son, let’s all calm down.”

Luke’s expression did not change.

“You sit back down.”

Richard sat.

Maya tried to move.

Pain crossed her face.

Luke saw it.

His jaw tightened.

Trent noticed.

That was the mistake.

He looked down at Maya and said, “See what you did?”

Luke moved before the sentence finished.

Not wildly.

Not violently.

Just fast enough to put himself fully between Trent and Maya.

Trent took one step back.

The bat lowered.

Then the front hallway filled with boots.

“Police!”

Two officers entered with weapons low but ready.

A female officer moved straight to Maya.

A medic followed seconds later.

Helen began crying instantly.

Not from guilt.

From strategy.

“She attacked my son.”

Luke turned his head slowly.

Helen stopped mid-sob.

The officer near Maya looked at the broken phone pieces.

Then at Maya’s arms.

Then at her belly.

“Ma’am, can you tell me your name?”

Maya swallowed.

“Maya Carter Maddox.”

“Are you pregnant?”

“Nine months.”

“Did your husband hurt you?”

Trent shouted, “Don’t answer that.”

Luke’s voice cut through the room.

“She will answer.”

The officer turned sharply toward Trent.

“Sir, be quiet.”

Maya looked at Luke.

He nodded once.

Not pushing.

Not commanding.

Only promising he would stay.

Maya placed both hands over her belly.

“Yes.”

The word was small.

But it changed the entire room.

The officers restrained Trent.

Helen lunged forward.

“She’s lying!”

The medic looked at Maya’s blood pressure cuff.

Then shouted for transport.

The baby’s heart rate had dipped.

Luke’s face went pale for the first time.

Maya grabbed his sleeve.

“I’m scared.”

He crouched beside her.

“I know.”

“But you are not alone now.”

As they lifted Maya onto the stretcher, Trent looked at her like she had betrayed him.

Maya looked back once.

“No.”

May you like

“You did this in the light.”
