PART 8

Maya did not go back to the luxury apartment.

Not once.

Luke packed her things with a police escort while Nora documented every item.

Baby clothes.

Medical papers.

A box of childhood photos.

A ceramic mug Maya had bought before marriage.

Her wedding dress stayed behind.

So did the expensive furniture.

So did the couch where Helen had sat cheering.

So did the rug.

Maya wanted none of it.

Luke brought her belongings to his small house outside Tacoma.

It was not luxurious.

It had an uneven porch, old floorboards, a vegetable garden, and a spare room he painted yellow while Maya was still in the hospital.

When Maya saw it, she started crying.

Luke panicked.

“What’s wrong?”

She looked at the crib.

The clean sheets.

The baby monitor.

The tiny stuffed fox on the windowsill.

“You made a room for her.”

He looked embarrassed.

“She needed one.”

Maya covered her mouth.

“So did I.”

Luke swallowed hard.

“You have one too.”

The first weeks were not easy.

Maya woke from nightmares.

Hope cried through the night.

Maya flinched when doors closed too loudly.

Luke learned to announce himself before entering rooms.

Nora visited with legal papers and frozen casseroles.

A neighbor named Mrs. Bennett brought diapers and pretended not to notice when Maya cried over them.

Trent sent messages through other people.

Apologies.

Threats.

Promises.

Accusations.

Nora collected them all.

Helen tried to send a baby blanket.

Maya did not open it.

Luke placed it in an evidence bag because Helen had written a note inside.

A child needs her father’s family.

Maya stared at the words.

Then said, “Not every family is shelter.”

Nora nodded.

“Some are weather warnings.”

The criminal case grew stronger.

The smashed phone yielded partial data.

The building cameras showed Luke entering after the SOS.

Neighbor statements confirmed screaming before he arrived.

Trent’s fingerprints were on the bat.

Helen’s fingerprints were on Maya’s overnight bag because she had tried to hide it.

Richard’s texts to Trent were recovered.

Keep her there until she signs.

Maya read that one three times.

Signs what?

Nora’s face darkened.
