PART 2

Maya had not spoken to Luke in eight months.

Not because she stopped loving him.

Because Trent had made loving her brother feel dangerous.

At first, Trent only complained.

Luke was too intense.

Luke judged him.

Luke acted like Maya was still a child.

Then the complaints became rules.

No late-night calls.

No private messages.

No visiting without Trent present.

No telling Luke about arguments because “soldiers only know how to escalate things.”

Maya was six months pregnant when Trent finally made her block him.

He stood over her while she did it.

He smiled when Luke’s name disappeared from her contacts.

“There.”

“Now our family can breathe.”

But Maya did not delete the emergency shortcut Luke had installed two years earlier.

Back then, she laughed at him for being paranoid.

He had taken her phone, programmed a silent SOS, and said, “You do not need it until the day you really need it.”

She rolled her eyes.

“You watch too many rescue videos.”

Luke looked at her seriously.

“No.”

“I have seen too many people lose time.”

That shortcut saved her.

Trent did not know it existed.

Neither did Helen.

Neither did Richard.

The morning everything broke, Maya had been trying to leave.

She had packed one small bag.

Prenatal records.

A change of clothes.

Cash hidden inside a baby blanket.

Her ultrasound pictures.

She was almost at the door when Helen walked in early with Richard behind her.

Helen saw the bag.

Then she smiled.

Not surprised.

Pleased.

“She’s doing it, Trent.”

Maya turned.

Trent stood in the bedroom doorway holding her phone.

“I knew you were ungrateful.”

Maya reached for the phone.

He lifted it away.

“Who were you going to call?”

She said nothing.

His face darkened.

Then his thumb moved across the screen.

Luke’s old SOS widget flashed for one second.

Maya lunged.

Trent smashed the phone against the coffee table.

But he was too late.

Some warnings only need one second to leave.

Across the city, Luke Carter’s phone lit up at 6:12 a.m.

SOS FROM MAYA.

LOCATION SHARED.

AUDIO ACTIVE.

He was already moving before the second alert finished vibrating.
