PART 9

The document was a postnuptial amendment.

Trent had prepared it two weeks before Hope was born.

Maya had never seen it.

Nora found a draft in Trent’s cloud storage after police obtained a warrant.

It gave Trent control over marital property.

Medical decision authority in the event of Maya’s incapacity.

And primary custodial authority over the child if Maya was declared unstable.

The language was polite.

That made it worse.

It was a cage written in legal font.

Maya sat at Luke’s kitchen table while Nora explained.

“They planned to make you sign under pressure.”

Maya looked at the baby monitor.

Hope slept in the yellow room.

“Why?”

Nora hesitated.

Luke answered first.

“Money?”

Nora nodded.

“Maya’s inheritance from your grandmother.”

Maya closed her eyes.

Her grandmother had left her a modest but protected trust.

Not millions.

Enough for safety.

Enough for education.

Enough for the kind of independence Trent hated.

Nora continued.

“If Trent gained control during a mental health claim or custody dispute, he could petition for access as household manager.”

Luke’s hands curled into fists.

Maya stared at the document.

Suddenly the morning made a different kind of sense.

Her packed bag.

Helen and Richard already there.

Trent smashing the phone.

The bat.

No one is coming to save you.

They were not only punishing her for leaving.

They were trying to terrify her into signing.

At the next hearing, Nora presented the postnuptial draft and Richard’s text.

Trent’s attorney argued it was standard family planning.

The judge did not look amused.

Then the prosecutor added charges tied to coercion and attempted financial exploitation.

Helen screamed in the hallway after the hearing.

“This is all because of that brother!”

Luke turned.

Maya caught his sleeve.

“No.”

She stepped forward herself.

Helen’s face twisted.

“You ruined my son.”

Maya held her gaze.

“No.”

“I stopped letting him ruin me.”

Helen raised a hand.

Two deputies moved instantly.

Helen froze.

Maya did not flinch.

That was new.

Her body remembered fear.

But her feet stayed still.

Later, Luke told her he was proud.

Maya looked at Hope in her carrier.

May you like

“So am I.”
