PART 7
Trent made bail two days later.
That was the first lesson Maya learned about justice.
It moves.
But not always at the speed fear requires.
Nora warned her before the notice reached the hospital.
“He cannot contact you.”
“He cannot come here.”
“He cannot approach the baby.”
Maya looked at Hope sleeping against her chest.
“Will that stop him?”
Nora did not lie.
“It gives police power to stop him.”
Luke stood by the window with his arms crossed.
“He won’t get past me.”
Nora looked at him.
“And you will not do anything that helps his defense.”
Luke’s jaw tightened.
“I know.”
“Good.”
Trent’s attorney filed first.
He claimed Maya was emotionally unstable.
He claimed Luke staged an invasion.
He claimed Helen’s words were taken out of context.
He claimed Trent was protecting himself from a wife in crisis.
Nora read the filing aloud in the hospital room.
Maya laughed once.
It came out hollow.
“He said no one was coming to save me.”
Nora looked up.
“And then they did.”
Maya touched Hope’s blanket.
“What if they believe him?”
Luke stepped closer.
“They heard the recording.”
“But people believed him for years.”
That was true.
Trent had built his public face carefully.
Successful consultant.
Devoted husband.
Good son.
Future father.
Maya had been the anxious wife.
The sensitive wife.
The pregnant wife who “needed rest.”
Helen had helped.
Richard had helped by nodding.
Friends had helped by not asking too many questions.
Silence had helped most of all.
Nora sat beside the bed.
“That changes now.”
The emergency hearing happened remotely because Maya was still recovering.
The judge listened to the 911 call.
The SOS audio.
The building security report.
The officer statements.
The hospital report.
Then Helen’s voice filled the courtroom feed.
Hit her again.
Maya watched the judge’s face harden.
Trent looked down.
Helen, sitting beside Richard on video, went pale.
Temporary protective orders were granted.
Trent was barred from Maya and Hope.
Helen and Richard were barred too.
Luke was approved as Maya’s emergency support person.
Maya cried only after the camera turned off.
Not because she was weak.

Because for the first time, a room full of people had heard the truth and written it down.
