part 6

PART 6
The baby was born at 8:04 a.m.
A girl.
Tiny.
Furious.
Alive.
Maya heard the cry through a haze of bright lights and medication.
She tried to lift her head.
A nurse leaned close.
“She’s here.”
“She’s breathing.”
Maya cried without sound.
“What’s her name?”
The nurse asked gently.
Maya’s lips trembled.
“Hope.”
It was the first name that came to her.
Maybe because she had almost lost all of it.
Maybe because the baby had carried some through the darkness.
Outside the operating room, Luke stood with blood on his sleeve from where Maya had gripped him too hard.
Nora arrived in heels, a black coat, and the expression of a woman prepared to ruin someone’s morning legally.
“Where is he?”
Luke pointed down the hall.
“Police custody.”
“And the in-laws?”
“Trying to claim Maya is unstable.”
Nora smiled coldly.
“Excellent.”
“Let them put that in writing.”
Within two hours, Nora had filed emergency protective requests.
No contact order.
Restricted access.
Hospital security hold.
Immediate custody protection for the newborn.
Preservation of all SOS recordings.
Preservation of building security footage.
A request for forensic analysis of the smashed phone.
Helen tried to enter the maternity floor at noon.
She arrived with Richard and a bouquet of white roses.
As if flowers could decorate over cruelty.
Hospital security stopped them.
Helen demanded to see “her grandchild.”
Nora stepped out of the waiting room.
“She is not your grandchild to access.”
Helen’s face twisted.
“You people are poisoning Maya.”
Nora held up a tablet.
“We have audio of you telling Trent to hit her again.”
Helen went silent.
Richard grabbed her elbow.
“Helen.”
Nora stepped closer.
“The next sentence you say should be to your attorney.”
Helen’s mouth closed.
For once.
When Maya woke, Luke was sitting beside her bed.
A bassinet stood nearby.
Hope slept inside, wrapped in a pink blanket.
Maya turned her head slowly.
“She’s okay?”
Luke’s eyes filled.
“She is perfect.”
Maya looked at him.
“And Trent?”
“In custody.”
“Helen?”
“Removed.”
Maya closed her eyes.
A tear slipped down her temple.
Luke thought she was crying from relief.
Then she whispered, “I should have called you sooner.”
His face broke.
“No.”
May you like
“I should have never let him make you think you couldn’t.”
