Chapter 16 - THE ROOM CHARLES COULD NOT SEALThe mansion’s panic-room door began closing around Charles and Lily.

Arthur moved first.

He drove his shoulder against the steel panel before it reached the frame. The mechanism crushed the fabric of his jacket and forced him to one knee, but the opening remained wide enough for Lily to crawl through.

“Go to Caroline,” he gasped.

The woman beside the desk held out both arms.

Lily ran toward her with the stuffed rabbit pressed beneath her chin.

Charles struck Arthur across the head with the ledger’s metal case.

“You were useful for one thing,” Charles snarled. “And now you cannot even remain angry at the correct person.”

Arthur collapsed against the floor.

Outside, tactical officers used Caroline’s transmitted plans to cut power to the medical-gas system. The panic room’s internal vents stopped before Charles could release the cylinders hidden behind Beatrice’s bookshelves.

The side wall exploded inward.

Officers entered through smoke and plaster.

Charles reached for Lily.

The woman everyone believed was Caroline stepped between them. Charles seized her hair, and a dark wig tore away.

The face beneath it resembled Caroline’s only from a distance.

Her real name was Mara Ellis.

She had been confined at St. Catherine’s for nine years under Caroline Bennett’s identity.

Charles had brought Mara to the mansion because he believed police would follow the wrong woman while the real Caroline opened the Rosewood archive with Kent.

Mara had agreed to help Caroline transmit the ledger. She had not been told Charles intended to use Lily as leverage.

“I thought the officers would arrive before he brought the child,” Mara said later.

Again, an adult had treated a predicted rescue as permission to leave a child inside danger.

The tactical team arrested Charles.

Arthur survived with a skull fracture and a damaged shoulder. He was arrested from his hospital bed after physicians stabilized him.

Lily entered independent pediatric care. She asked repeatedly for Judge Price, the only guardian she remembered. No one told her immediately that the judge had helped conceal her identity.

Mara received treatment under her own name.

The original guardianship ledger survived because Caroline’s upload had reached three separate archives before the mansion lost power.

At Clara’s hospital, the monitors returned one by one.

The Rosewood camera came back last.

Caroline stood beside the child’s empty bed. Kent remained near the DNA report, one hand resting over a portable drive.

“Do not send officers through the main entrance,” Caroline said. “Kent has attached the maternity archive to the oxygen-control system.”

Leah checked the hospital plans.

“The Rosewood Suite has no independent oxygen system.”

“It does beneath the floor.”

Kent smiled.

“Dr. Morgan remembers more than she believes.”

Clara held Gigi closer.

“What does the report say?”

Caroline removed the black security bar.

The paternal field did not reveal Charles, Arthur, or another Bennett.

It showed:

GENETIC SOURCE 61-A

REGISTERED PATIENT: LUCAS AVERY

STATUS: DECEASED

Ethan stared at the screen.

Clara’s shock was different.

They had used anonymous donor conception after Ethan learned he could not father a child biologically. They had selected a screened donor through Rosewood’s fertility program.

The donor number on their consent form had been 204.

Not 61-A.

“Who is Lucas Avery?” Clara asked.

Kent answered.

“A patient who never agreed to become anyone’s father.”

The portable drive displayed Lucas’s current medical status.

He was alive.

He had spent thirteen years inside a Bennett-funded rehabilitation residence under another name.

Kent lifted the drive.

“Gigi is not the only child whose body contains evidence.”

Caroline pressed a control beneath the bed.

The Rosewood doors locked.

Then she looked directly at Clara.

“I can keep Kent from destroying the archive. I cannot promise the method will leave everyone inside unharmed.”

Clara’s voice hardened.

“Then stop designing methods that require someone else to be harmed.”

For the first time, Caroline looked ashamed.

👉 Charles had been captured and Lily rescued, but Gigi’s conception now led to a living man whose genetic material had been stolen inside the same guardianship network.
