Chapter 21 - THE FATHER ETHAN CAME HOME TO BEEthan spent six weeks in a rehabilitation hospital.
Kent’s medication had weakened his muscles and disrupted short-term memory. Some days he remembered the entire evidence folder. Other days he asked why Clara wore her wedding ring on a chain instead of her hand.
Clara answered each time.
“I am not ready to wear it.”
Ethan never argued.
Gigi visited under medical guidance. She watched him from Clara’s lap before approaching the bed.
“Daddy sleepy?”
“For a long time,” Ethan said.
She touched his hand.
Then withdrew.
No adult told her to kiss him.
Their relationship resumed in minutes, pauses, and ordinary repetition. Ethan read the same picture book every visit because Gigi requested it. When he lost his place, she corrected him with impatient confidence.
Clara and Ethan lived separately after his discharge.
He moved into an accessible apartment near the hospital. Clara and Gigi remained in a protected rental chosen without Bennett ownership.
The separation confused relatives who believed survival required a romantic reunion.
Clara refused the expectation.
Ethan had been kidnapped.
He had also concealed the birthday risk before the crash and maintained investigative access without telling his wife.
“I thought knowledge would make you a target,” he said during counseling.
“I became the target without the knowledge.”
“Yes.”
“You believed you could finish before Gigi turned two.”
“Yes.”
“You believed your timetable controlled Arthur.”
“No. I believed the safeguards controlled the trust.”
“You believed something would stop him after he entered the room.”
Ethan closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
That assumption had followed every adult in the story.
Someone else would stop the harm.
A camera.
A trust.
A doctor.
A tactical team.
A hidden sister.
The family court confirmed Ethan’s legal parenthood. Clara and Ethan had consented together to assisted reproduction. The clinic’s substitution violated both of them, but it did not make Lucas Avery Gigi’s legal father.
Charles’s attorney argued Ethan’s absence and secrecy made him unfit.
The judge rejected the request.
A kidnapped parent did not lose his child because his captors kept him away. Ethan’s investigative choices could be reviewed without transferring Gigi to the family responsible for the danger.
Ethan’s hacking created another question.
He had accessed Bennett servers without authorization and copied confidential records involving unrelated families.
Prosecutors separated his actions.
Files copied to expose imminent abuse were preserved.
Private material unrelated to crimes was returned or destroyed.
Ethan entered a deferred agreement concerning unauthorized access. His cooperation and the necessity of preserving evidence prevented incarceration, but he could not serve as trustee, investigator, or guardian of the recovered archives.
He accepted.
The evidence folder no longer belonged to him.
Clara controlled her personal files.
Each affected family received separate representation.
Investigators controlled criminal evidence.
When Ethan’s health improved, he asked Clara whether they should divorce.
“I don’t know,” she said.
“Do you want me to move farther away?”
“No.”
“Do you want me home?”
“Not yet.”
The absence of a complete answer frightened him.
He did not turn the fear into pressure.
Months later, Clara invited him to spend one night in the guest room after Gigi developed a fever. They took turns checking her temperature.
Nothing dramatic happened.
In the morning, Ethan made pancakes badly.
Gigi threw one onto the floor.
No one called the behavior evidence of instability.
Their marriage rebuilt through current choices rather than the assumption that an old certificate could restore it.
Then Arthur requested a meeting with Ethan before trial.
Ethan refused privately and agreed only to testify in court.
“You helped erase me,” he told Arthur through the recorded deposition. “Rescuing Lily does not purchase a conversation you want for yourself.”
