Chapter 17 - THE MAN INSIDE GIGI’S DNALucas Avery lived under the name Matthew Lane.
The Bennett Foundation described him as a forty-one-year-old man with permanent cognitive impairment and no family contacts. His residence stood outside Vermont beside a lake, surrounded by cameras disguised as wildlife equipment.
Independent physicians found no cognitive condition preventing him from making decisions.
Lucas had a movement disorder caused partly by medication administered during his confinement. His speech came slowly, but his understanding remained clear.
When Detective Nora Hale explained the DNA report, he closed his eyes.
“They used the sample.”
“What sample?” Nora asked.
At twenty-two, Lucas entered St. Catherine’s after challenging a guardianship petition filed by his uncle. The uncle wanted control of a manufacturing settlement Lucas inherited after his parents died.
Dr. Kent diagnosed him with paranoid delusions.
During treatment, staff told Lucas that medication might threaten his future fertility. They offered to preserve genetic material.
Lucas signed a form authorizing private storage for his personal use.
The sample was transferred to Rosewood.
He never agreed to donation.
He never knew a child had been conceived.
Nora arranged separate counsel before showing him Gigi’s photograph.
Lucas looked at the two-year-old smiling beside a hospital blanket.
“Does she know?”
“No.”
“Do her parents?”
“They learned the sample number yesterday.”
“Does the man raising her want to leave?”
The question reached Ethan through the secure interview feed.
“No,” Ethan answered.
Lucas looked toward the camera.
“You knew she was donor-conceived?”
“Yes. Clara and I chose that together.”
“You chose someone else.”
“Yes.”
Lucas nodded slowly.
“Then Kent stole from all of us.”
Independent testing confirmed that Lucas was Gigi’s genetic contributor. It did not make him her legal father automatically.
Ethan had consented to assisted reproduction with Clara and had been recognized as Gigi’s parent from birth. The clinic’s substitution constituted reproductive fraud, but it did not erase the family created afterward.
Lucas requested his medical history be shared with Gigi’s physicians.
He requested no custody and no access to her trust.
“I may want to write something she can read when she is older,” he said. “I may decide I do not.”
The choice remained his.
Clara received the result beside Ethan.
“Did you ever know they changed the donor?” she asked.
“No.”
“Did you check the clinic records after she was born?”
“I saw the number 204 on the documents.”
“Ethan’s folder contained everything else.”
“I did not know Kent had mirrored the fertility archive.”
Clara believed him.
Belief did not repair the larger injury between them.
Ethan had spent months preparing for a birthday trap without telling her. He had carried an evidence folder into their marriage while deciding which truths she could survive.
“You are Gigi’s father,” Clara said. “That does not mean we return to the marriage we had before your funeral.”
“I understand.”
“Do you?”
“I am beginning to.”
The trust auditor confirmed Gigi’s Bennett rights came through Clara. Her paternal genetics did not alter eligibility.
Charles’s claim that paternity could remove Gigi had never been legally sound.
It had been emotionally useful.
He expected Clara and Ethan to fracture while the trust remained frozen.
The Vermont residence contained six other patients whose genetic material had been preserved. Four samples had entered fertility programs without valid consent.
One had produced two children.
Those families required confidential notification.
No public list would turn children into evidence of a medical scandal.
Lucas agreed to testify about St. Catherine’s.
Before leaving the interview, he asked Nora whether Leah Morgan was safe.
“How do you know Dr. Morgan?”
Lucas looked toward the window.
“She tried to remove the samples.”
He remembered Leah under another surname.
Dr. Leah Grant, a young resident who discovered Kent’s fertility-transfer log. She confronted him inside Rosewood.
Kent ordered staff to place her in Patient Room Fifteen.
Lucas saw her again months later.
