Chapter 24 - THE JUDGE AND HIS GRANDDAUGHTEREmily Price’s emergency call lasted four minutes.
She told her father that Kent had given her medication after she threatened to reveal Lily’s paternity. She felt dizzy and could not stand.
Judge Price drove to her apartment.
Building footage showed him arrive twelve minutes later.
He remained inside for twenty-seven minutes before contacting emergency services.
During that time, he called Charles three times.
Deleted messages from Emily’s phone.
Removed a folder containing Bennett Foundation payments.
When paramedics arrived, Emily was unconscious but alive.
She died at the hospital.
Price claimed Charles told him the medication was a harmless sedative and that public attention would allow Arthur to seize Lily.
“I thought I was protecting my granddaughter,” he testified.
“You delayed treatment for her mother,” the prosecutor said.
“I believed Emily would recover.”
“Did you check her breathing?”
“Yes.”
“Was it normal?”
“No.”
“Did you call a doctor?”
“Charles said Kent was coming.”
Kent never came.
Price’s actions did not prove he wanted Emily dead. They proved he accepted a lethal delay because evidence and custody felt more urgent than his daughter’s breathing.
He had become Lily’s guardian afterward.
The child knew him as Grandpa Bernard. He read bedtime stories, attended school meetings, and hired Maria Santos as her daily caregiver.
He also hid Lily’s father, trust rights, and mother’s final call.
Care and betrayal occupied the same home.
Maria testified that she performed most daily parenting while Price worked.
She had questioned why Lily could not attend ordinary preschool or see other relatives. Price told her the child faced kidnapping threats.
Some threats from Charles were real.
The isolation still served the concealment.
The jury convicted Price of manslaughter through reckless delay, judicial bribery, obstruction, guardianship fraud, evidence destruction, and conspiracy involving St. Catherine’s transfers.
He received decades in prison and permanent removal from judicial office.
At sentencing, Lily remained outside the courtroom.
Her advocate submitted no victim statement because she was five and did not yet understand the proceedings.
Price attempted to address her through the camera.
The judge stopped him.
“A child is not required to receive your explanation because you are ready to give it.”
Lily entered temporary foster care after the mansion rescue. Maria Santos underwent an independent review and requested guardianship.
She had not known the records were fraudulent.
She had provided safe, consistent care.
She also admitted accepting Price’s restrictions without contacting outside authorities.
The family court did not treat that failure as identical to Price’s crimes. Maria completed training, submitted to monitoring, and demonstrated that Lily trusted her.
Lily moved into Maria’s home gradually.
Clara did not seek custody simply because Lily was Gigi’s cousin and Arthur’s daughter. The girls barely knew each other. Clara remained available as a safe relative through supervised visits.
Maria became Lily’s legal guardian and later adoptive mother after Lily requested it.
The adoption preserved Emily Price as biological mother and Arthur Bennett as biological father. It did not erase the criminal history or require Lily to use Bennett.
At nine, Lily chose the name Lily Price Santos.
Price belonged to the mother she had lost as well as the grandfather who betrayed her. Santos belonged to the woman who raised her afterward.
Judge Price wrote letters from prison.
Lily opened none before adulthood.
The investigation recovered Emily’s missing folder. It contained proof Kent had threatened her and that Charles planned to register Lily only if Gigi’s hospital transfer failed.
Emily died trying to prevent her daughter from becoming an alternative financial key.
Her record changed from accidental overdose to homicide caused by Kent’s drugging, with Price’s reckless delay recognized separately.
The question now moved to the physician.
Kent had written futures for dozens of people.
