Her face appeared on Clara’s phone from a small room with bare walls. She looked thinner than Clara remembered, but her eyes were steady.
“I’ve been waiting for someone else to see it,” Lauren said.
“Where are you?”
“A protected shelter.”
“Why didn’t you contact me?”
“I did. Your mother answered.”
Clara felt cold.
Lauren had called after Arthur struck Oliver during a dinner. Victoria arrived before police and persuaded her to take the child to Dr. Kent instead of an emergency room.
Kent documented the injury as accidental.
When Lauren threatened to report Arthur, Charles froze her accounts. Arthur filed for custody. Victoria produced recordings of Lauren crying and shouting after months of intimidation.
Judge Price called the recordings evidence of instability.
“Where is Oliver?” Clara asked.
“St. Catherine’s Family Restoration Center.”
The name sounded like a clinic.
It was a private residential institution owned through a Bennett charity.
Lauren had not seen her son in eleven months.
Every request was denied because therapists claimed contact triggered regression.
“Did Arthur visit?”
“Twice. After each visit, Oliver stopped speaking to staff.”
Lauren had photographs, messages, and partial medical records. Ethan helped her copy them before his death.
“He believed Oliver’s case was connected to the trust,” she said.
“Gigi’s trust?”
“All of them.”
Beatrice Bennett’s legacy agreement did not activate only for Gigi. It created separate protected accounts for every great-grandchild.
Oliver’s share had activated when he turned two.
Arthur gained control after Lauren was declared unfit.

The family had relocated Oliver before executing the second plan.
Clara searched Ethan’s folder for St. Catherine’s.
A video file appeared.
Oliver sat at a therapy table six months earlier. He looked toward someone behind the camera.
A therapist asked, “Who makes families safe?”
Oliver answered mechanically.
“Grandma Victoria.”
“And what happens when mothers disobey?”
“They lose their children.”
The therapist placed a drawing in front of him.
It showed Clara holding Gigi beside a birthday cake.
