Chapter 1 - THE MISSING LOCKThe bathtub had been running for less than thirty seconds when Lily screamed.

Claire Morgan spun away from the faucet.
Her six-year-old daughter stood in the hallway, staring through the open bathroom door as though something terrible waited beyond the steam. The toy boat Lily usually carried into the tub slipped from her fingers and struck the carpet.
“No!” Lily cried.
Her knees collapsed.
Claire rushed forward, but Lily crawled the final distance and wrapped both arms around her mother’s leg.
“Mommy… I don’t want to take a bath anymore.”
Claire shut off the water.
Lily had always loved bath time. She invented ocean adventures with plastic boats, filled the tub with bubbles, and complained whenever Claire told her it was time to get out.
Tonight, she shook so violently that Claire could feel every tremor through her pajamas.
Claire dropped to her knees and pulled Lily against her chest.
“You don’t have to. Look at me, sweetheart.”
Lily kept staring at the bathroom.
“What happened?”
The child’s fingers tightened around Claire’s shirt.
“Ryan comes in after you leave.”
For one second, Claire heard nothing except water dripping from the faucet.
Ryan had been her husband for fourteen months.
He was not Lily’s biological father, but he had spent nearly two years presenting himself as the gentle man who understood how difficult life had been after Claire’s divorce. He packed school lunches, read bedtime stories, and volunteered to watch Lily whenever Claire worked late.
Claire forced her voice to remain steady.
“What does Ryan do when he comes in?”
Lily pressed her face against Claire’s shoulder.
“He says I’m not allowed to lock the door.”
Claire looked toward the bathroom.
The brass doorknob had once contained a small privacy lock. She remembered using a coin to release it whenever Lily accidentally locked herself inside.
Now the locking button was gone.
A smooth metal plate covered the hole where it had been.
Claire had not authorized the change.
“Did Ryan remove the lock?”
Lily nodded.
Footsteps sounded at the end of the hallway.
Ryan appeared beneath the family photographs wearing gray sweatpants and a dark sweater. His expression was calm until he noticed Claire’s smartphone resting on the carpet with the camera recording.
His eyes changed.
“Why is she crying?”
Claire rose slowly, placing herself between him and Lily.
“Step away from my daughter.”
Ryan’s jaw tightened.
“She’s confused.”
“About what?”
“She had a nightmare last week. You know how imaginative she gets.”
Lily hid behind Claire.
Ryan moved toward the bathroom and wrapped one hand around the doorknob.
“This is my house too.”
Claire reached behind her and activated the emergency-call shortcut on her phone.
Ryan saw the movement.
He advanced.
“Give me that.”
Claire knocked his hand away with enough force to send him into the wall. She pulled Lily backward toward the staircase.
“I choose her.”
The words stopped him.
For months, Ryan had framed every disagreement as a test of loyalty. If Claire questioned him, she was choosing her ex-husband. If she defended Lily’s fears, she was undermining the family. If she asked for privacy, she was keeping secrets.
He had expected the pattern to work again.
It did not.
Red-and-blue light suddenly moved across the framed photographs.
Ryan turned toward the front entrance.
Heavy footsteps crossed the porch.
The front doorknob began rotating.
Lily lifted one trembling hand and pointed toward the bathroom vent.
Behind the white metal slats, a tiny green light blinked.
A camera.
Ryan looked at it.
For the first time, he appeared surprised.

He had not known it was there.
👉 Ryan had removed the bathroom lock, but someone else had secretly recorded everything that happened after Claire left the room.
