The building had been empty when police entered. A side door stood open, and whoever questioned her escaped through a service alley.
She was frightened but physically unharmed.
Claire refused to meet her privately.
Their conversation took place through glass with Detective Shaw present.
“You worked for Dr. Vale.”
Margaret nodded.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because the clinic destroyed families.”
“And you signed the reports.”
“I typed what doctors dictated.”
“You interviewed Ryan.”
“Once.”
Margaret admitted that Ryan was thirteen when Dr. Vale brought him into the recording room. His mother wanted sole custody and claimed the boys feared their father.
Ryan initially said he missed him.
Dr. Vale stopped the recording.
Margaret was instructed to explain that Ryan’s brother, Cole, might be sent away if Ryan did not provide stronger statements.
“He changed his story,” Margaret whispered.
“You threatened his brother.”
“I repeated what Vale told me.”
“You were the adult in the room.”
“Yes.”
The final transcript accused Ryan’s father of violent behavior. The court accepted it.
Years later, Ryan discovered the original recording had not been destroyed.
Margaret had secretly copied it.
She kept the photographs and tapes because she feared Dr. Vale would blame her if investigators reopened the clinic.
Ryan believed those files could clear his father’s name and expose everyone involved.
“Why didn’t you give them to him?” Claire asked.
“Because Cole wanted more than the tape.”
“What?”
“The client list.”
Dr. Vale’s clinic served wealthy parents, attorneys, judges, and private guardianship companies. Some used legitimate services. Others paid for interviews designed to produce specific custody outcomes.
The client list could expose hundreds of compromised cases.
Margaret hid it after the clinic closed.
Ryan and Cole had spent years searching for it.
Claire understood the surveillance now.
They questioned Lily about documents because they believed Margaret had given the list to her daughter.
“Did you?” Megan asked.
Margaret looked toward Claire.
“I put it inside her old wedding album.”
The album was stored in Claire’s attic.
Ryan could not access it openly without revealing his knowledge.
So he watched.
He questioned Lily.
He cloned Ethan’s voice.
He entered Margaret’s home.
He built a case portraying Claire as unstable in case she discovered the operation.
Margaret began crying.
“I thought hiding it protected you.”
“You let me marry a man whose childhood you helped destroy.”
“I did not know he was Margaret Vale’s son.”
Claire stared.
“Margaret Vale?”
Ryan and Cole’s mother had married Dr. Thomas Vale after the custody case. She changed the boys’ surname to match her first husband’s name, then later restored Ryan’s original surname.
Dr. Vale was not merely the evaluator.
He became their stepfather.
He raised them inside the same coercive system that separated them from their biological father.
Margaret’s client list implicated him in later child disappearances.
Including Sophie Lane.
The six-year-old vanished after telling a school counselor that someone entered her bathroom at night.
Her mother was accused of coaching the statement.
Custody transferred to the father.
Days later, Sophie disappeared.
Dr. Vale signed the emergency evaluation.
“Is Thomas Vale alive?” Claire asked.
Margaret’s hands began trembling.
“He died four years ago.”
Megan placed a photograph from the abandoned clinic on the table.
It had been taken that evening.
A man stood behind Margaret during her recorded confession.
