Under the fabricated identity, Lily’s mother was listed as deceased.
Her guardian was Ryan.
Claire stared at the screen.
“He planned to erase me without taking her far.”
The custody case would portray Claire as unstable after falsely accusing Ryan. Ethan’s history of dishonesty would discredit him. Margaret’s connection to Vale would make the entire maternal family appear manipulative.
Ryan would become the calm parent who remained.
The system did not need to abduct Lily physically.

Ryan saw the file during questioning.
He began crying.
“I didn’t know she would be told Claire died.”
“What did you think reassignment meant?” Megan asked.
“That Claire would lose temporary custody until she stabilized.”
“Stabilized from what?”
“Discovering the list.”
Ryan had accepted an undefined punishment because he believed he could protect Lily afterward.
Thomas depended on adults refusing to examine the consequences of vague words.
At the coastal property, officers found a recorded session involving Sophie.
Thomas sat outside the camera frame.
“Why did you warn Lily?”
“Because nobody warned me.”
“Ryan is not your enemy.”
“He made her scared.”
“Fear creates disclosure.”
“You create fear so children say what you need.”
Thomas remained silent.
Sophie continued.
“You taught everyone to call control protection.”
Then Evelyn entered the frame.
She looked older than in the photographs but unmistakably alive.
She told Sophie that Claire’s client list would destroy legitimate protections along with corrupt cases.
Some children on the list were genuinely unsafe with biological families.
Public release could expose locations and identities.
Sophie answered:
“Then protect their names. Don’t protect the adults.”
The clarity of a child defeated years of professional excuses.
Evelyn struck the table.
“Your mother said the same thing.”
Sophie froze.
