Chapter 3 - THE FATHER WHO WAS NOT IN DENVERClaire called Ethan under police supervision.

He answered immediately.
A crowded restaurant appeared behind him on the video screen. Snow pressed against the windows, and several coworkers waved from a table.
“Claire? What happened?”
“Where are you?”
“Denver. Why?”
“Show me the room.”
Ethan turned the camera. His company logo appeared on a conference display. A television above the bar showed a local weather report. His location seemed genuine.
Officer Ruiz held up the hidden phone.
“Mr. Parker, do you recognize this device?”
Ethan stared.
“That’s my old phone.”
“When did you last possess it?”
“Almost three years ago.”
“Did you speak with Ryan tonight?”
“No.”
“Have you ever instructed him to enter Lily’s bathroom?”
Ethan’s expression hardened.
“What?”
Ruiz played the second male voice.
Ethan listened twice.
“That sounds like me.”
“Is it you?”
“No.”
Claire watched him carefully.
Ethan had lied during their marriage about money, work trips, and another relationship. She knew the small signs that appeared when he concealed something.
Tonight, he looked frightened rather than defensive.
“Who would have recordings of your voice?” she asked.
“My company. Social media. Family videos.”
“Enough to make full conversations?”
Ethan hesitated.
“Ryan asked me for old recordings last year.”
Claire felt cold move through her.
“Why?”
“He said he wanted to create a birthday video for Lily.”
No birthday video ever appeared.
Ryan had collected Ethan’s voice samples.
Investigators disconnected the hidden phone from the network and sealed it. The vent camera remained active through a separate cable leading into the attic.
Police found a storage unit above Lily’s bathroom containing a small server, wireless transmitters, and several unlabeled memory cards.
The hardware looked professional.
Ryan denied installing it.
“I hired a contractor named Miles to replace the fan.”
“Full name?” Megan asked.
“Miles Carter.”
“Phone number?”
Ryan produced it.
The number had been disconnected.
The payment came from a prepaid account.
Claire looked toward him.
“You brought an unidentified man into my daughter’s bathroom?”
“He came recommended.”
“By whom?”
Ryan did not answer quickly enough.
“By Ethan.”
Ethan heard the exchange through the video call.
“I never recommended anyone.”
Ryan turned toward the screen.
“You sent me his information.”
“Show them.”
Ryan opened his email.
A message from Ethan’s address contained Miles’s name and a photograph. The email instructed Ryan to repair the bathroom vent discreetly because Claire worried easily about strangers inside the house.
Ethan denied sending it.
His account showed no copy in the sent folder.
The message had passed authentication checks.
Someone had accessed his real email infrastructure.
Megan recovered the first memory card from the attic server.
It contained hallway footage, not bathroom images.
The camera recorded who approached the door, how long they remained inside, and who moved through the house while Lily bathed.
Ryan appeared repeatedly.
Sometimes he stood outside listening.
Sometimes he entered after Claire went downstairs.
But on three nights, another man arrived through the bedroom window while Ryan kept Claire occupied in the kitchen.
The man’s face remained hidden beneath a baseball cap.
In the clearest frame, he turned slightly.
Claire recognized the scar near his ear.
Miles Carter was not a contractor.
He was Ryan’s older brother, Cole.

The man Ryan claimed had been living in Arizona for five years.
👉 Ryan had secretly allowed his brother into the house during Lily’s bath time—and both men had hidden the visits from Claire.
