Chapter 12 - RYAN’S LAST BARGAINRyan raised both hands when officers surrounded him.
The drive remained pinched between two fingers.
“I’m not helping Thomas.”
“You escaped custody,” Ruiz said.
“Evelyn arranged the transport route. I got away before she moved me.”
“Then put down the drive.”
“I need Claire to hear me.”
Claire appeared through Ruiz’s body-camera screen.
“I’m listening.”
Ryan looked toward Lily’s empty bedroom.
“Thomas has Cole.”
“Where?”
“Inside the old clinic server room.”
“Why steal the list?”
“Because it contains Cole’s real identity.”
Cole’s birth record had been altered after the custody case. Thomas was his biological father.
Evelyn had an affair with the evaluator before marrying him. She used accusations against her first husband partly to conceal Cole’s paternity.
Ryan grew up believing Cole shared his father.
Thomas used the secret to control them both.
“If the list reaches court,” Ryan said, “Cole believes he loses every legal identity he has.”
“That is another lie,” Claire replied. “A corrected record does not erase the person.”
“He doesn’t believe that.”
“Because Thomas taught him identity belongs to whoever holds the paper.”
Ryan’s fingers shook.
He offered the drive in exchange for a promise that Cole would receive medical care and independent counsel.
Ruiz agreed only to request those protections, not guarantee outcomes.
Ryan placed the drive on the floor.
For once, he accepted uncertainty without controlling someone else first.
Then Thomas spoke through the bathroom vent.
“Disappointing.”
A mechanical lock engaged behind the officers.
The wall passage sealed.
Ryan looked toward the ceiling.
“He’s starting the purge.”
The house server began deleting camera footage.
Sophie inserted her duplicate card into Ethan’s hidden phone. The phone automatically uploaded recordings outside Thomas’s network.
Evidence survived.
But the purge did something else.
Every smart lock connected to Vale’s system began opening across the state.
Residences housing protected children lost security simultaneously.
Thomas intended to create chaos, proving his centralized control remained necessary.
Federal teams rushed to replace compromised locks.
Claire understood the design.
Thomas had made himself indispensable by building dangers only he could manage.
Ryan opened a maintenance panel beneath Lily’s closet.
“Cole taught me the manual shutdown.”
“Why didn’t you use it earlier?” Ruiz asked.
“Because it also releases the basement doors.”
“What’s behind them?”
Ryan looked toward Claire on the screen.
“The children Thomas never reassigned successfully.”
No one knew how many remained below other connected properties.
Shutting down the network might free them.
It might also release adults placed among them as guards.
Ruiz ordered coordinated teams to every identified location before touching the control.
They did not have enough officers.
Thomas began counting down through the speakers.
Claire refused to let him dictate the timing.
“Ryan, open it.”
Ruiz looked toward the camera.
“That could place people at risk.”
“They are already at risk behind locked doors.”
Ryan entered the code.
Across Washington, hidden locks disengaged.
At the coastal residence, three children emerged from a basement room and ran toward officers.
At an abandoned clinic, a teenage boy attacked a guard and opened two medical rooms.
At Claire’s house, the lowest basement door unlocked.
Cole staggered into the hallway carrying a child in his arms.
The child wore Lily’s pajamas.
Claire stared.
“Who is she?”
Cole looked toward the body camera.
