Chapter 7 - THE MAN IN THE REFLECTIONPolice compared the reflection with old photographs.

Age-progression software produced a strong match to Thomas Vale.

His death certificate listed cardiac arrest at a private rehabilitation facility. The body was cremated within twenty-four hours.

Ryan had signed the identification.

When confronted, he refused to answer without his attorney.

Claire watched through the observation glass.

His posture had changed since police entered the house. The cold authority was gone. He looked like someone waiting for a voice to tell him which version of the truth would keep him safe.

Megan placed the reflected image before him.

“Is Thomas Vale alive?”

Ryan stared at it.

“I don’t know.”

“You identified his body.”

“I identified a covered stretcher.”

“Why?”

“Cole told me Thomas had arranged it.”

“You helped fake his death?”

“I signed a document.”

“You never verified the body?”

“No.”

“Did Thomas instruct you to surveil Lily?”

Ryan’s eyes moved toward the camera.

That movement answered before his words did.

“He said Claire had the client list.”

“What did he tell you would happen if you failed?”

“That Cole would be charged for Sophie’s disappearance.”

“Did Cole take Sophie?”

Ryan’s breathing became shallow.

“He moved her.”

“Where?”

“I don’t know.”

“Was she alive?”

“Yes.”

“At the time?”

“Yes.”

The distinction chilled the room.

Thomas Vale maintained control through divided knowledge. Ryan watched Claire. Cole moved children. Another person handled records. No one knew enough to expose the entire operation without implicating someone they loved.

“What did you do in Lily’s bathroom?” Megan asked.

Ryan closed his eyes.

“I asked questions.”

“Did you record her?”

“The hallway system recorded movement.”

“That was not the question.”

“No.”

“Did Cole?”

“I don’t know.”

“Did you remove the lock?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Thomas said closed doors allowed Claire to control the narrative.”

Ryan repeated the phrase as though it came from a textbook.

“You terrified a six-year-old because a dead man told you privacy was manipulation.”

Ryan’s face broke.

“He said she would forgive me after Claire was arrested.”

“For what?”

“Concealing evidence. Emotional instability. Interfering with Ethan’s custody.”

The cloned voice scripts were intended to make Lily report that both fathers agreed Claire was dangerous.

Ryan planned to seek emergency guardianship once the client list surfaced.

“What would happen to Lily after that?” Claire asked through the speaker.

Ryan looked directly at the glass.

“Thomas said she would stay with me.”

“You believed the man who destroyed your childhood should control hers?”

“I believed I could keep him from hurting her if she stayed close.”

“You brought him into her life.”

Ryan lowered his head.

“Yes.”

The attic search recovered Claire’s wedding album.

The client list had been removed.

Someone replaced it with a handwritten note.

THANK YOU, LILY. YOU SHOWED US WHERE MARGARET HID IT.

Claire remembered Lily carrying the album downstairs two weeks earlier. She said Ryan asked for photographs of Mommy’s wedding.

He had used the child to locate the evidence without understanding what she delivered.

The note contained a second line.

SOPHIE IS READY TO COME HOME.

Attached was a current photograph of an eleven-year-old girl.

Sophie Lane was alive.

Behind her stood Cole.

And beside him was a woman Claire recognized from the family albums.

Ryan and Cole’s mother.
