Chapter 2 - THE VOICE ON THE EMERGENCY CALLOfficer Daniel Ruiz entered first.

His female partner, Officer Megan Shaw, followed with one hand near her holster. They found Claire halfway down the staircase with Lily behind her and Ryan standing beside the bathroom door.

Ruiz separated them immediately.

“Sir, move into the living room.”

“This is a family misunderstanding.”

“Move now.”

Ryan obeyed only after Megan stepped between him and the hallway.

Claire knelt beside Lily while Ruiz checked the bathroom. He did not touch the vent camera. He photographed it, closed the bathroom door, and asked Claire whether anyone else had access to the house.

“My former husband has a key for emergencies, but he’s in Denver this week. My mother visits. Ryan’s brother came by last month.”

“What about repair workers?”

“Ryan hired someone to replace the bathroom fan.”

Ryan called from the living room.

“The old fan was dangerous.”

Claire looked toward him.

“You never told me you replaced it.”

“You were working.”

Ruiz asked Lily whether she felt safe speaking while Ryan remained in another room.

She nodded but clung to Claire’s hand.

A child specialist was requested before detailed questions continued. Until then, Ruiz kept everything simple.

“Did you see someone put the camera there?”

“No.”

“Did you know it was there?”

Lily shook her head.

“Did Ryan ever point to it?”

“No.”

That troubled Claire more.

If Ryan had installed the camera, why had he appeared shocked when Lily revealed it?

The emergency dispatcher contacted Ruiz through his radio.

Claire’s phone had opened a live line before police reached the house. The dispatcher heard Ryan demanding the device and Claire saying, “I choose her.”

But another emergency call had been placed from the property seventeen minutes earlier.

Claire stared.

“I didn’t call.”

“The first caller didn’t speak,” Ruiz said. “Dispatch heard water running, a child crying, and an adult male voice near the bathroom.”

Ryan looked up from the living room.

“That never happened.”

“Your statement can wait.”

The earlier call originated from an inactive smartphone connected to the home Wi-Fi.

Officers searched the hallway, Lily’s bedroom, and the bathroom without disturbing potential evidence.

Megan found the phone inside a hollow space behind the family photographs.

It was wrapped in a bath towel.

Its screen was cracked, but the call remained visible.

The device belonged to Claire’s former husband, Ethan.

She recognized the blue case.

“He lost that phone three years ago.”

“Where?” Megan asked.

“In this house. Before Ryan moved in.”

The timeline made no sense.

Ethan lost it when Lily was three. The battery should have been dead years ago.

Yet it was fully charged.

Someone had hidden it behind the wall and connected it to a charging cable running through the bathroom vent.

The device contained dozens of short audio files.

Most were named by date.

The newest had been recorded that evening.

Ruiz played only the first few seconds.

Water ran.

Lily whispered, “Please close the door.”

Ryan answered, “You don’t make rules in my house.”

Then another man spoke through what sounded like a phone speaker.

“Keep her calm. Claire cannot know yet.”

Ryan looked toward the hidden device.

His face went pale.

Claire recognized the second voice.

It belonged to Ethan.

Lily’s biological father.

But Ethan had called Claire from Denver less than an hour earlier.

👉 The hidden phone captured Ryan taking instructions from Lily’s father, even though Ethan claimed to be hundreds of miles away.
