Chapter 9 - ETHAN’S SECOND PHONEEthan did not attempt to flee.
He surrendered at the Seattle airport after landing from Denver. Police recovered a second phone from his carry-on bag.
It contained encrypted messages with Sophie.
Claire confronted him through a secured interview feed.
“You knew she was alive.”
“For three months.”
“You entered the wall behind Lily’s bathroom.”
“Yes.”
“You lied to police.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Thomas monitors official systems.”
“You believed lying protected Lily?”
“I believed it protected Sophie.”
“Everyone protects one child by sacrificing another.”
Ethan flinched.
Sophie contacted him through a former employee at his company. She found his name in Thomas Vale’s files and believed he could help because he remained outside Ryan’s family.
Ethan entered the house while Claire and Ryan attended a school meeting. Sophie showed him the surveillance passage.
He wanted to remove Lily immediately.
Sophie stopped him.
“She said Thomas would move every missing child if the house went silent.”
“So you left Lily there?”
“I installed an independent camera and emergency phone.”
The vent camera and hidden smartphone belonged to Ethan and Sophie.
They recorded Ryan’s questions and Cole’s visits.
“Why clone your voice?” Claire asked.
“I didn’t.”
Sophie believed Thomas had collected Ethan’s recordings through custody mediation. Ryan used the scripts without knowing Ethan had entered the house secretly.
“Why not tell me?”
“Because I thought you would confront Ryan before we found the other children.”
“You decided I could not be trusted with my own daughter’s safety.”
“Yes.”
Ethan did not soften the answer.
He had repeated the same controlling logic that destroyed their marriage.
Claire’s anger did not erase the evidence he preserved.
But his evidence did not erase the choice to leave Lily exposed.
The second phone contained Sophie’s latest message:
EVELYN MOVED US. COLE WANTS TO SURRENDER. THOMAS SAYS LILY’S MOTHER HAS THE LIST.
Another message followed:
THE LIST IS NOT PAPER.
Margaret had hidden printed names inside the wedding album, but the true client list was encrypted within family photographs. Each image contained fragments of data.
The albums collected from Claire’s home, Margaret’s attic, and Dr. Vale’s clinic together formed the key.
Thomas needed Claire’s childhood photographs because Margaret encoded the final segment inside them.
That was why Ryan watched family albums.
Why Cole searched Margaret’s house.
Why Evelyn preserved old pictures.
Why Sophie had been moved repeatedly through homes containing specific family archives.
The children were being used as couriers for evidence they did not understand.
Police reconstructed most of the list.
It named attorneys, physicians, guardians, judges, private schools, and twenty-seven children whose identities had been changed after custody disputes.
Sophie was one.
Ryan and Cole were listed too.
Lily’s name had been added recently.
Status:
MATERNAL SEPARATION PENDING.
Claire felt the words like a physical blow.
Thomas had not merely planned to discredit her.
He had prepared a new identity for Lily.
The destination field remained encrypted.
Ethan supplied the final image fragment from his phone.
The location opened.
A private children’s residence outside Tacoma.
Police entered before dawn.
They recovered six children.
Sophie was not among them.
One girl handed officers a toy boat identical to Lily’s.
