Chapter 10 - The pool warrant
Investigators obtained a search warrant based on:
Emily’s statement.
The visible submerged bags.
Cole’s unsolicited remark that the bags had “nothing to do with Emily.”
Mrs. Harris’s observations.
Evidence of suspected theft from my home.
The pool was drained partially under controlled conditions.
The first bag contained household trash.
That sounds anticlimactic.
It mattered.
Investigators did not assume every black bag was sinister.
Second bag:
Broken packaging.
Old paperwork from the estate.
Third:
My fire-resistant lockbox.
Pried open.
Fourth:
Empty jewelry cases.
A roll of silver duct tape.
Disposable gloves.
A small pry bar.
Fifth:
Emily’s backpack.
Her phone.
A pink notebook.
One sneaker.
And a pale-blue pillowcase.
The phone had water damage.
Investigators did not magically recover every file.
Some cloud records were available separately.
The physical device still mattered.
Why was Emily’s backpack in the pool?
Cole said Rachel threw it.
Rachel said Cole did.
