Chapter 26 - The pool is cleaned
The old Maddox property eventually sold.
Before closing, the pool had to be drained and repaired or filled.
Rachel and Cole no longer controlled the estate process.
A neutral administrator handled it.
Mrs. Harris called me when contractors arrived.
“Thought you’d want to know.”
I did.
Emily surprised me by wanting to see it after the work was finished.
Not during evidence removal.
Years later.
The pool was clean.
Blue.
Ordinary.
New owners had replaced part of the patio.
The kennel was gone.
The shed remained.
Emily stood at Mrs. Harris’s fence.
She was thirteen.
Taller.
Different haircut.
She looked at the pool.
“That’s it?”
“That’s it.”
“It looks small.”
Trauma is terrible at scale.
Memory makes places enormous.
She asked:
“Did they find anything else in it?”
“No.”
“You sure?”
“Yes.”
No hidden body.
No secret final bag.
No second victim.
The pool contained stolen property, discarded evidence, and objects connected to the adults’ attempt to control what I would learn.
