Chapter 18 - The main truth about Rachel
For months I wanted the central truth to be simple.
Rachel had always hated Emily.
False.
Rachel loved her.
Rachel had helped teach her to ride a bicycle.
Stayed awake during stomach flu.
Built an elaborate solar-system costume for second grade.
Cried at Laura’s memorial with us.
The main truth was uglier because it did not erase those memories.
Rachel made the first terrible decision because she believed Emily was overreacting about Cole.
Then she discovered Emily had told the truth.
At that point Rachel faced three facts:
Her brother had stolen from me.
She had secretly allowed him into our house despite my boundary.
She had already punished Emily for telling the truth.
Rachel became more afraid of my judgment than of what Emily was experiencing.
She chose concealment.
Then Cole turned concealment into intimidation.
Rachel did not plan to kill Emily.
She did not plan to dump her into the pool.
She did not intend to keep her locked outside permanently.
But she knowingly allowed repeated confinement because releasing Emily without controlling her communication meant losing control of the story.
That was the mechanism.
Not hatred.
Narrative control.
Rachel wanted five more minutes to fix what she had done.
Then one more hour.
