Chapter 23 - Mrs. Harris

Emily wanted to see Mrs. Harris.

Not immediately.

Six months later.

We brought flowers.

Mrs. Harris cried when Emily hugged her.

Then apologized.

“I should have called sooner.”

Emily asked:

“When?”

Mrs. Harris looked at me.

I said:

“You can tell her.”

“The first night I heard you.”

Emily thought.

“Why didn’t you?”

“I believed Rachel when she said you were playing.”

“Okay.”

Mrs. Harris started crying harder.

Emily became uncomfortable.

Children are not designed to carry adult guilt.

She said:

“You called Daddy later.”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

Then asked whether Mrs. Harris had cookies.

Conversation over.

That was healthier than any speech I could have given.
