Chapter 11 - The threat about the pool
Emily eventually explained why she begged me not to look.
Cole had taken her to the pool edge after she kicked the kennel door repeatedly.
He pointed into the dirty water.
“See those bags?”
She nodded.
“That’s what happens to things people can’t keep their mouths shut about.”
He later claimed he meant stolen property.
Maybe.
Emily heard something else.
She asked:
“Are you going to put me in there?”
Cole said he never threatened that.
Emily said he answered:
“Not if you stop.”
No recording.
No adult witness.
That allegation remained contested.
Prosecutors did not build an attempted-murder theory around it.
They did use the statement as part of the intimidation context.
That distinction mattered.
I believed my daughter.

The criminal system still had to prove specific charges with evidence.
Those are not the same standard.
