Chapter 12 - My first mistake

I punched Cole.

Not that day.

Three days later.

I wish I could write something nobler.

I cannot.

Cole had been released pending further charging decisions because investigators were still sorting property rights, theft evidence, and the confinement timeline.

Conditions kept him away from Emily.

He came to the sheriff’s office with counsel for another interview.

I was leaving after meeting Detective Ortiz.

We saw each other in the parking lot.

He said:

“Michael.”

I kept walking.

Then:

“I never hurt her like she’s saying.”

I stopped.

He continued:

“Rachel’s the one who—”

I crossed the distance.

Hit him once in the mouth.

Security intervened immediately.

No heroic beating.

No satisfying movie moment.

One stupid punch.

Cole needed two stitches inside his lip.

I was cited.

My attorney looked at me later and said:

“You gave the defense a gift.”

“I know.”

“You also gave your daughter a father who can now be described as physically volatile.”

“I know.”

“Was it worth it?”

“No.”

That answer came faster than I expected.

I eventually entered a diversionary resolution tied to the misdemeanor assault allegation, completed an anger-management course, paid Cole’s medical bill, and had the charge dismissed under the terms available to me.

I did not hide any of it from Emily.

She asked:

“Did you hit him because of me?”

I said:

“I hit him because I lost control.”

“That’s different?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“One makes you responsible for my hand. The other makes me responsible.”

May you like

She nodded slowly.

Good.
