Chapter 25 - Rachel’s letter
Two years after the kennel, Rachel sent a letter through Emily’s therapist.
It was reviewed first.
No demand for forgiveness.
No justification.
It said:
“Emily, you told me something true about Cole and I treated your truth like misbehavior because believing you would have forced me to admit I made a bad decision.”
Then:
“I put you inside the kennel the first time. Cole did not make me do that.”
Good.
“I told myself it was only ten minutes. When ten minutes became longer, I told myself that was because you kept fighting. That was wrong. You were allowed to fight being locked somewhere.”
Better.
Then:
“When I learned Cole really had stolen from your dad, I should have called your father immediately. Instead I became afraid he would leave me. I made protecting my marriage more important than protecting you.”
Emily read that twice.
Then asked:
“Did Dad leave her anyway?”
“Yes.”
She nodded.
“That was dumb.”
