Chapter 1

Her Pregnant Belly Moved Seconds Before Cremation—Then Her Husband Opened the Coffin.

Daniel Mercer was leaning over his pregnant wife’s coffin when the white lace over her stomach moved.

Not much.

Just once.

A small ripple beneath the fabric.

But enough to stop his breath.

Clara lay inside the mahogany coffin in a white maternity gown, her blonde curls arranged too perfectly against the satin lining.

Seven months pregnant.

Declared dead.

Minutes from cremation.

Daniel’s hand hovered above her abdomen.

Then it moved again.

His grief vanished into something sharper.

“Open the coffin.”

Helena Vale’s face stiffened.

Marcus Vale stepped forward too quickly.

“Close it now.”

Daniel swung one arm out and blocked him.

“No.”

He leaned closer, eyes fixed on Clara’s chest.

There.

A faint rise.

Almost nothing.

But not nothing.

“Her stomach moved.”

Helena stepped backward, dropping her black lace handkerchief.

Dr. Crane looked toward the chapel doors as if calculating distance.

One crematorium attendant hit the emergency stop.

Another threw open the doors.

Two paramedics rushed in with a medical bag and portable monitor.

One checked Clara’s airway.

The other clipped a sensor to her finger.

A faint rhythmic tone filled the chapel.

The lead paramedic looked up.

“She has a pulse.”

Gasps shattered the silence.

Marcus tried to step closer.

Daniel moved between him and the coffin.

“Nobody touches her except the medical team.”

Helena stared at Clara’s moving body, terrified.
