Chapter 8

Clara’s hand twitched.
Barely.
But Daniel saw it.
His entire body leaned toward her before he stopped himself.
The paramedic noticed too.
“We have movement,” she said calmly.
Helena made a soft sound that might have been a sob.
Daniel did not look at her.
He looked only at Clara.
His wife.
His stubborn, laughing, brilliant Clara, who had painted the nursery ceiling pale blue because she said babies deserved sky before they could see it.
The memory struck him, but he did not fall into it.
He stayed in the room.
In the present.
In the chapel where she was still fighting.
Marcus whispered, “This wasn’t supposed to happen.”
Daniel’s head turned.
Marcus froze.
The words had slipped out too low for the whole chapel, but Daniel heard them.
So did Evelyn, the female relative, whose hand remained at her throat.
“What wasn’t?” Daniel asked.
Marcus looked at Helena.
Helena’s face went white.
The paramedic said, “We’re moving her now.”
Daniel let the question hang.
He would return to it.
