Chapter 5

Helena Vale had performed grief beautifully.
She had dabbed tears that never fell.
Kissed the air above Clara’s coffin.
Spoken softly about peace, dignity, and letting go.
She had even told Daniel he was being cruel by delaying the cremation.
“Dragging this out will only hurt you more,” she said.
Daniel had nearly believed her.
Helena was Clara’s mother.
Who would rush a daughter’s final goodbye unless it was kindness?
But when the paramedic confirmed Clara’s pulse, Helena did not collapse with relief.
She froze.
Her terror came first.
Then she remembered to cry.
That order mattered.
Daniel looked at her and saw the mask being put back on.
“My baby,” Helena whispered.
But she did not move toward Clara.
She looked at the attendants.
Then the doors.
Then Marcus.
Daniel filed away every glance.
Clara had once told him her family handled scandal like surgery.
Cut fast.
Seal clean.
Leave no visible wound.
He had laughed then.
He was not laughing now.
A living pregnant woman had been placed in a coffin.
Minutes from cremation.
And Helena’s first instinct was not joy.
May you like
It was fear that the process had stopped.
