Chapter 7

Dr. Crane made his mistake quietly.
He stepped backward one more time.
Not far.
Just enough to suggest escape.
Daniel noticed.
So did the female relative by the flowers.
She looked at Crane with new horror.
“You signed,” she whispered.
The chapel went colder.
Crane’s lips parted.
“I followed procedure.”
Daniel turned slowly.
“What procedure puts a breathing pregnant woman in a coffin?”
Crane did not answer.
Helena snapped, “Daniel, stop.”
He looked at her.
“No.”
“You’re making accusations in a sacred place.”
“You tried to cremate my wife in one.”
The words hit the room hard.
No one defended Helena.
Not Marcus.
Not Crane.
Not the attendants.
The paramedics kept working, professional and focused, but even one of them glanced toward Crane with visible disbelief.
Daniel did not move toward the doctor.
He did not shout.
He did not touch him.
He only looked at him with a grief so sharp it became control.
“Stay where you are.”
Crane’s shoulders sank.
Outside the chapel doors, someone called for the stretcher.
The emergency was moving forward.
