Chapter 3

Clara’s skin looked pale beneath the chapel lights.
Too pale.
But not gray.
Not gone.
Daniel had noticed that when he first approached the coffin.
He had touched the satin lining beside her hand and whispered her name.
No response.
No movement.
Only silence.
Helena placed one gloved hand on his shoulder.
“Don’t disturb her.”
That word stayed with him.
Disturb.
As if his wife had chosen this.
As if his unborn child did not matter.
As if a husband leaning close one final time was an inconvenience.
Now the paramedic was beside Clara, moving with quiet urgency.
No drama.
No shouting.
No panic.
Just trained hands checking what should have been checked before anyone brought Clara near a cremation chamber.
Daniel watched the monitor.
He did not understand the medical details.
He only understood the sound.
A faint rhythm.
Life.
Behind him, Helena whispered, “This is impossible.”
Daniel turned.
“Why?”
Her mouth closed.
Marcus’s eyes flicked toward Dr. Crane.
Dr. Crane looked down.
The female relative in the black wrap dress pressed one hand to her throat, genuinely horrified.
She had not known.
Daniel saw that too.
Some people in the chapel were shocked.
Others were afraid.

There was a difference.
