Chapter 4

Marcus Vale moved like a man protecting a secret, not a grieving brother-in-law.

The moment Daniel said open the coffin, Marcus lunged for the lid.

Not toward Clara.

Toward concealment.

That was what Daniel could not forget.

A normal person would have looked.

Checked.

Prayed.

Marcus tried to close the coffin.

Daniel stood between him and Clara now, shoulders squared, black suit stiff with tension.

“Back up,” he said.

Marcus’s jaw tightened.

“You’re emotional.”

“My wife is alive.”

“You don’t know that.”

The paramedic’s voice cut through them.

“She has a pulse.”

Marcus went silent.

Helena’s hands trembled near her pearls.

Dr. Crane stepped backward again, closer to the aisle.

Daniel saw him.

“Doctor,” Daniel said coldly.

Crane froze.

Daniel did not ask the question yet.

Who signed her death certificate?

Who approved this cremation?

Who decided there was no need to wait?

Those questions would come.

But not now.

Now Clara needed space.

Air.

Medical hands.

Protection.

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Nobody touches her except the medical team.”
