Chapter 6

The paramedics worked around Clara with careful speed.
No invasive treatment.
No chaos.
One checked her breathing.
The other prepared her for transport.
Daniel stayed close but did not interfere.
His hand shook at his side.
He wanted to touch Clara’s face.
He wanted to tell her he was there.
He wanted to apologize for almost letting them take her.
But the paramedic glanced at him.
“Sir, give us room.”
Daniel stepped back immediately.
That was what love required now.
Not panic.
Not possession.
Room.
Clara’s chest rose faintly again.
The white lace over her abdomen shifted with the smallest motion.
Daniel’s throat closed.
The baby.
He could not ask.
Not yet.
The prompt of hope was too fragile.
No final diagnosis.
No declaration.
No answer that could hold the weight of his fear.
He only watched the paramedic keep one hand steady near Clara’s shoulder.
Alive.
That word repeated inside him.
Alive.
Helena whispered something to Marcus.
Daniel turned sharply.
They stopped.
“Anything you need to say,” he said, “say it where the paramedics can hear you.”
Marcus’s face hardened.
May you like
Helena looked away.
