Chapter 10 - The Route Through the SnowLucas struck the attendant before the syringe reached Walter.

The man crashed against the ambulance wall. Walter seized the emergency latch while Lucas forced open the interior partition.

The driver accelerated.

Snow swept across the road outside.

Lucas pulled the parking brake.

The ambulance fishtailed, struck a snowbank, and stopped.

No graphic collision occurred, but every object inside shifted violently.

Walter hit the padded bench.

Lucas shielded him.

The driver escaped into the trees before federal vehicles caught up.

The attendant carried a Hawthorne credential under a false name and a phone displaying instructions from Helena.

DELIVER WALTER ALONE. DISPOSE OF LUCAS IDENTITY AFTER SIGNATURE.

Lucas photographed the screen.

Walter looked at the message.

“They were never going to keep you alive.”

“You sound surprised.”

“I believed your identity had value.”

“It has value only while they need my signature.”

The federal team changed vehicles and continued to St. Catherine’s under armed escort.

The hospital’s public floors appeared ordinary. Families sat beside elderly patients. Nurses moved through bright corridors. No one upstairs knew an identity archive existed below them.

The basement elevator required the ring.

Walter placed it against the scanner.

The doors opened.

Helena waited inside the archive with the real Evelyn, Derek, and Aaron.

Derek looked bruised and terrified.

Aaron stood beside him in Lucas’s coat.

Seeing his own near-double disturbed Lucas more than the video had.

Aaron’s eyes shifted toward Nathan, who had joined remotely from the mansion.

The brothers stared at each other through the screen.

Nathan whispered his childhood nickname.

“Rory.”

Aaron’s face changed.

Helena activated the implant behind his ear.

He stiffened.

Then he signed the document.

Lucas stepped forward.

“I never authorized that.”

Helena held up a camera.

“We have already recorded Lucas Mercer confirming the transfer.”

“That isn’t me.”

“To a court reviewing a medically unstable heir, resemblance and certification may be enough.”

Evelyn struggled against her restraints.

“My credentials won’t validate it.”

Helena looked at Derek.

He opened the silver suitcase and removed a hardware token stolen from Evelyn’s office.

Miriam had copied the attorney’s biometric pattern during prior substitutions.

Helena could authenticate documents as Evelyn.

Derek expected payment.

Instead, Helena injected him.

He collapsed, conscious but unable to move.

She no longer needed him.

Lucas moved toward her.

Security doors dropped between them.

Walter stood before the archive scanner.

“Helena, this ends when I open the records.”

“No. It begins.”

She wanted Walter to unlock the master files because Gregory had not been the only person using Hawthorne.

Judges.

Hospitals.

Insurance companies.

Political donors.

Entire fortunes had been transferred through manufactured incapacity and controlled death.

Helena believed releasing everything would destroy innocent protected identities alongside criminals.

She wanted permanent control.

Walter wanted independent review.

Lucas trusted neither founder.

He looked at Aaron.

The substitute slowly moved one hand toward the implant behind his ear.

Nathan coached him through the screen.

“Three fingers behind the scar. Pull the magnetic clip.”

Aaron obeyed.

The receiver detached.

His posture changed.

Helena turned.

Aaron drove his shoulder into her.

The archive door unlocked during the struggle.

Lucas rushed through.

Evelyn freed one hand and seized the authentication token.

Derek crawled toward the silver suitcase.

Walter reached the master terminal.

Then Gregory’s face appeared on every screen.

He was not at the mansion.

He was inside a control room somewhere beneath St. Catherine’s.

“You all believed Helena owned Hawthorne,” he said. “She only managed it.”

Walter stared at his son.

Gregory had spent decades pretending to exploit a system Walter created.

In reality, he had become its hidden controller.

The locked bedroom, the stolen files, Rachel’s implant, the doubles, the false ambulance—every path led back to him.

Gregory smiled.

May you like

“Open the archive, Father. Or I erase every identity inside it.”

👉 Helena lost control of the substitute, but Gregory revealed himself as Hawthorne’s true master and threatened to erase thousands of lives unless Walter obeyed.
