Chapter 4 - The Woman from the GraveLucas could not move.

The woman standing at the top of the staircase had the same gray eyes as his mother. The same narrow scar near her chin. The same way of pressing two fingers against the railing when nervous.

But Elaine Mercer had died in a hospice room fifteen years earlier.

Lucas had held her hand.

He had signed the cremation authorization.

He had scattered her ashes near Cape Cod.

The woman descended slowly.

“Lucas.”

Her voice broke the last defense inside him.

He stepped backward.

“No.”

“I know what you saw.”

“You died.”

“The woman in hospice was my sister.”

Lucas stared at Walter.

“You had another sister?”

Walter closed his eyes.

“Eleanor had a twin.”

Her name was Eliza Vale.

The family erased her existence after a childhood medical scandal involving Gregory’s mother. Eliza was raised abroad under another surname. When Eleanor needed to disappear permanently, Eliza agreed to exchange identities.

The woman Lucas knew as his mother during his final years had been his aunt.

But the story made no sense.

“She knew everything about my childhood.”

Eleanor’s face crumpled.

“We wrote to each other for years. She knew every detail.”

“You let another woman die as you.”

“I was trying to keep you alive.”

Lucas laughed once, without humor.

“Everyone in this family calls deception protection.”

Eleanor reached the foyer.

Walter stood.

The siblings looked at each other with a mixture of relief and anger.

“You came back too early,” Walter said.

“Rachel moved the schedule.”

Rachel looked trapped.

Eleanor had been hidden at an independent residence under Walter’s protection. Rachel discovered the location while searching the old trust files.

She brought Eleanor to the mansion because Gregory needed her alive.

The Vale trust required direct confirmation of Eleanor’s death before Lucas’s heir status could be challenged.

The original cremation records were false.

If Eleanor signed a statement claiming Lucas was not her son, Gregory could invalidate his claim.

“Did you sign?” Lucas asked.

“No.”

Gregory interrupted.

“She will.”

Evelyn turned toward him.

“You confined an elderly man and abducted a woman to control a trust?”

Gregory smiled coldly.

“No one was abducted. Everyone came voluntarily.”

Eleanor lifted her sleeve.

A dark mark circled her wrist.

Lucas’s fury returned.

Rachel whispered, “Derek handled the transport.”

Derek looked at her.

“You said no one would know.”

Their alliance began breaking in the foyer.

Walter pointed toward the silver suitcase.

“The passports were for the transfer.”

Gregory planned to move Walter and Lucas under false names to a private medical facility in Vermont. Eleanor would sign a denial. Rachel would claim Lucas suffered a psychological collapse after discovering an affair.

The family would explain every disappearance as voluntary treatment.

Lucas opened the hidden folder from the suitcase.

The facility was called Hawthorne Rest.

Its chief medical director was Nathan Cole.

Every face turned toward Walter’s doctor.

Nathan raised both hands.

“I have never worked there.”

His signature appeared on the admission forms.

Forged.

Then Eleanor looked at him.

“You treated me there last year.”

Nathan went still.

“I’ve never seen you before.”

“You called me Margaret Vale.”

“That isn’t possible.”

Eleanor removed a silver medical bracelet from her pocket.

Nathan’s name was engraved beneath the facility logo.

The doctor’s memory had been altered by someone—or he was lying.

Evelyn examined the bracelet.

A tiny tracking chip was embedded inside.

The signal was active.

Headlights appeared beyond the mansion windows again.

A black medical van turned into the driveway.

Rachel whispered, “They weren’t supposed to come until midnight.”

The silver suitcase had not been the escape plan.

It had been the intake package.

Someone from Hawthorne Rest had arrived to collect the family’s inconvenient witnesses.

👉 Eleanor’s return exposed the planned medical disappearance, while the arriving van suggested Gregory’s network was already operating beyond the mansion.
