Chapter 5 - Hawthorne RestThe black van stopped beneath the mansion’s portico.

Two men and one woman stepped out wearing dark medical jackets. No company logo appeared on the vehicle, yet each carried a laminated credential identifying Hawthorne Rest as a private neurological residence.
The lead attendant presented paperwork.
“We are here for Walter Langley and Lucas Mercer.”
Evelyn took the documents.
“No one authorized transport.”
The attendant pointed toward Gregory.
“Mr. Langley did.”
Walter spoke from behind her.
“Gregory Langley is not my guardian.”
The attendant hesitated.
His instructions had described Walter as disoriented and Lucas as potentially violent.
Both men stood calmly before him.
The scenario did not match the paperwork.
Lucas photographed the van, credentials, and license plate.
Rachel rushed forward.
“There has been a misunderstanding.”
The lead attendant looked at her.
“You confirmed the pickup two hours ago.”
Derek swore under his breath.
Gregory grabbed Rachel’s arm.
“Stop talking.”
The attendant’s expression sharpened.
“We were told the subjects would be sedated.”
Lucas stepped closer.
“By whom?”
The woman attendant moved toward the rear doors of the van. Lucas saw a stretcher, restraints, medication bags, and two labeled property boxes.
One box read WALTER LANGLEY—DECEASED EFFECTS.
The other read LUCAS MERCER—INDEFINITE HOLD.
Walter read the labels.
“Interesting.”
The lead attendant began backing toward the driveway.
Evelyn blocked him.
“You will remain until independent authorities arrive.”
He laughed.
“You have no jurisdiction.”
Walter held up the hidden phone.
“My attorney does not need jurisdiction to preserve your confession.”
The van’s side door slammed.
The female attendant had opened one of the medication bags.
Nathan recognized the vial.
“That dosage could stop an elderly patient’s breathing.”
The attendants fled toward the vehicle.
Lucas grabbed the rear handle before it closed.
Derek charged from the foyer and struck him from behind.
Lucas fell against the van.
Rachel screamed Derek’s name.
He ran with the attendants.
The vehicle accelerated out of the driveway, leaving tire tracks across the snow.
Walter’s hidden camera captured the entire exchange.
Evelyn called a federal contact rather than local police. Hawthorne Rest operated across state lines and appeared connected to fraudulent medical transfers.
Nathan examined Walter’s wrists and dehydration.
“Those marks are not from simple restraint.”
Walter looked at him.
“What do you mean?”
“They match the width of a clinical compliance band used in memory-conditioning programs.”
Eleanor became pale.
Hawthorne Rest had not only held her.
It had subjected her to repeated “orientation treatments” involving sedatives, isolation, and scripted family histories.
She remembered Nathan’s face because he appeared during one treatment cycle.
Nathan insisted he had never visited the facility.
Walter asked when he last remembered every month of his life clearly.
The doctor looked unsettled.
He had lost nearly six weeks after a car accident the previous year. Gregory arranged his rehabilitation.
At Hawthorne Rest.
Nathan had been a patient.
The facility later used his medical identity to sign forms.
Evelyn opened the hidden flash drive again.
A second partition appeared after Walter entered a password.
It contained Hawthorne intake files for judges, attorneys, doctors, and heirs connected to disputed estates.
Some were real patients.
Some were legally declared dead while still alive.
Others returned to their lives with missing memories and altered signatures.
The Vale family was one case among dozens.
Lucas searched for his mother.
Eleanor Vale appeared under three names.
Lucas searched his own.
His file was marked UNPROCESSED—MATERNAL RESISTANCE.
Then another name appeared.
Rachel Mercer.
Status:
COMPLETED AGE 17. MEMORY STABILIZED.
Rachel stared at the screen.
“I was never there.”
Pamela began crying.
Gregory looked toward the door.
Walter understood before anyone else.
Rachel’s involvement had not begun with greed as an adult.
Her family had sent her to Hawthorne Rest as a teenager.
Whatever happened there may have shaped every choice afterward.
Rachel touched the scar behind her ear.
A small surgical mark.
She had always been told it came from a childhood bicycle accident.
The hidden file listed an implanted compliance tracker.
It was still active.
The black van had not come only for Walter and Lucas.
May you like
It had come to retrieve Rachel as well.
👉 Hawthorne Rest connected the family’s crimes to a memory-control network, and Rachel’s hidden patient file suggested she might also have been manipulated for years.
