Chapter 12 - The Brothers Eleanor LostEleanor appeared on the archive monitor from the mansion.

She saw the birth certificates in Lucas’s hands.

Her face told him they were real.

Gregory stopped the server purge.

For the first time, his control fractured.

“You told me my mother died giving birth.”

Walter looked toward the camera.

“I believed Eleanor could not safely raise you.”

“You stole me.”

“I raised you as my son.”

“You changed my name.”

“To protect you from the Vale succession dispute.”

Gregory laughed bitterly.

“The same excuse every person in this family uses.”

Eleanor had given birth to Gregory at nineteen. His father was a married political donor who threatened to take the child and institutionalize her.

Walter arranged an illegal adoption.

He became Gregory’s legal father.

Years later, Eleanor had Lucas with Daniel Mercer.

She disappeared again when Gregory’s financial crimes endangered Lucas.

But Gregory never knew she survived.

He grew up believing Walter’s love was conditional and Pamela’s family offered the only path to power.

When he discovered pieces of Hawthorne’s archive, he found proof Walter had lied about his birth.

He did not find Eleanor’s location.

Helena offered access in exchange for helping expand the system.

Gregory accepted.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” he asked Eleanor.

“I was told you were safe.”

“I was raised inside the house of the man who erased you.”

Walter flinched.

“I protected you.”

“You taught me that identity belongs to whoever controls the documents.”

That was the deepest inheritance Walter had given him.

Not money.

Method.

Lucas looked between them.

Gregory had suffered.

He also locked Walter without water, manipulated Rachel, and prepared Lucas for medical disappearance.

Pain explained the road.

It did not excuse the destination.

Pamela appeared behind Gregory in the control room.

She removed a key card from his console.

Gregory turned.

“What are you doing?”

“Rachel almost died.”

“You approved her treatment.”

“I approved therapy. Not implants.”

“You knew enough.”

Pamela’s face collapsed.

“Yes.”

She inserted the card into another terminal.

The physical server purge stopped.

Gregory struck the console.

Independent agents traced the control-room location to a sealed sublevel beneath the hospital chapel.

Before they reached it, Gregory opened an emergency tunnel.

Pamela did not follow.

He left her behind.

At the archive, Walter’s partial disclosure continued.

Hospitals received notifications that living patients had been declared dead.

Courts received evidence of forged guardianship.

Families received case numbers but not protected locations.

No arrests, trials, or final consequences occurred. The network was only beginning to surface.

Lucas found another file under Eleanor’s name.

It showed a recent video of Rachel visiting Hawthorne voluntarily.

She spoke to Gregory without visible coercion.

“I’ll bring Lucas into the family,” she said. “But I want Walter protected.”

Gregory answered, “You cannot protect both.”

“I can delay you.”

Rachel knew more before the marriage than she admitted.

She married Lucas partly under Gregory’s orders.

But she also spent years slowing his plans.

The betrayal and protection had existed side by side.

Evelyn recovered the final legal file.

Walter’s trust did not transfer entirely to Lucas.

It required a joint decision between Eleanor’s surviving sons.

Lucas and Gregory.

Walter had designed the inheritance to force reconciliation after his death.

Instead, it gave Gregory continuing power.

Lucas stared at him through the monitor.

“I don’t want your trust.”

Gregory smiled faintly.

“You will. Everyone does once they understand what it controls.”

A warning appeared.

Gregory had moved the trust’s operational assets into a temporary shell company.

The director was Rachel Mercer.

Her implant may have controlled her body.

But her signature had controlled the money.

Then Rachel woke at the mansion.

She looked at the screen, saw the transfer, and whispered:

“I never signed that.”

The biometric system verified it as genuine.

Someone had captured her signature during treatment.

Or Rachel was still hiding another decision.

👉 Gregory’s childhood explained his obsession with control, but the trust transfer placed Rachel at the center of Hawthorne’s money before anyone knew whether she had agreed.
