Chapter 3 - The Name Lucas Never HadLucas had been a Mercer for thirty-eight years.

His birth certificate said his father was Daniel Mercer, a construction foreman who died when Lucas was six. His mother, Elaine, raised him alone until cancer took her fifteen years later.
Nothing in his life connected him to Walter’s family before Rachel.
Yet the passport in his hand showed his face beneath the name Lucas Vale.
The issue date was three months earlier.
His signature appeared on the application.
It was forged.
Evelyn demanded that no one touch the documents until police or an independent investigator could preserve them. Walter refused to call local authorities yet.
“Gregory has friends in the department,” he said.
Gregory exploded.
“This has gone far enough.”
He reached for the suitcase.
Walter’s doctor, Nathan Cole, stepped into the foyer.
“I’ve examined Walter for years. He has never been diagnosed with dementia.”
Pamela stared at him.
“You signed the incapacity form.”
“I signed a request for neurological testing. Someone replaced the second page.”
Gregory looked toward Rachel.
She looked toward Derek.
No one looked at Walter.
Lucas opened another folder.
Inside were photographs of him taken over several years.
Leaving work.
Meeting Rachel.
Visiting his mother’s grave.
Standing outside the mansion before his wedding.
Someone had been monitoring him long before he became part of the family.
Walter sat beside the staircase.
“Lucas, your mother’s name was not Elaine Mercer when I knew her.”
Lucas turned slowly.
Walter continued.
“She was Eleanor Vale.”
The room became silent.
Walter had a younger sister named Eleanor. According to family history, she died in a boating accident at twenty-three.
No body was recovered.
The family stopped speaking her name.
“She was my mother?”
“Yes.”
“Then Daniel Mercer?”
“The man who protected her.”
“Protected her from whom?”
Walter looked toward Gregory.
“My son.”
Gregory’s face twisted.
“You old liar.”
Walter did not raise his voice.
“When Eleanor discovered what Gregory was doing with the Vale accounts, she threatened to expose him. She vanished before she could testify. Daniel took her and their infant son out of Massachusetts under false identities.”
Lucas felt the floor tilt beneath him.
“Why didn’t she tell me?”
“Because she believed Gregory would find you.”
“He did.”
“Not until Rachel met you.”
Lucas looked at his wife.
Her eyes filled with tears.
For one second, she looked almost ashamed.
Then she said, “I didn’t know at first.”
“How long did you know?”
“Before the wedding.”
The answer cut deeper than the affair.
Rachel had married him while knowing his identity was connected to the family fortune.
Walter’s private trust passed through bloodlines. If Walter died without a competent designated heir, the money moved to Gregory.
But if Eleanor’s son was alive, Lucas outranked him.
Rachel had not married a stranger.
She had married the man standing between her father and the inheritance.
“You were supposed to sign a postnuptial agreement,” Rachel said.
“You told me it was estate planning.”
“It would have transferred your rights.”
“And when I refused?”
Her eyes moved toward the locked room.
Walter answered for her.
“They shifted to incapacity.”
The hidden documents included two petitions.
One declared Walter mentally incompetent.
The other declared Lucas unstable after a supposed workplace breakdown.
If both were approved, Gregory would control the family trust.
Derek crouched near the scattered jewelry and quietly reached for a flash drive.
Lucas saw him.
He grabbed Derek’s wrist.
Derek struck him in the ribs.
Evelyn shouted.
Walter’s doctor moved backward.
Gregory lunged toward the staircase, attempting to reach the upper hallway.
Pamela screamed at him to stop.
A door slammed upstairs.
Everyone froze.
They had believed the mansion contained only the people in the foyer.
Walter stared toward the bright corridor.
“Rachel,” he said, “who did you bring home in the other car?”
Rachel’s face went white.
A shadow moved beyond the railing.
Then an elderly woman stepped into view wearing Walter’s missing signet ring.
Lucas recognized her from a photograph kept beside his mother’s bed.
Elaine Mercer.
Eleanor Vale.

His mother was alive.
👉 Walter revealed Lucas as the hidden heir, but the appearance of the mother Lucas had buried proved his entire childhood had been built around another disappearance.
