Chapter 7 - The Woman Wearing Evelyn’s FaceLucas moved first.
He struck the impostor’s wrist before she could withdraw the object from her coat.
A small injector fell to the marble floor.
Nathan kicked it away.
Walter’s supposed attorney twisted free and ran toward the kitchen.
Rachel blocked the narrow hallway.
The woman grabbed her by the hair and slammed her against the wall.
Lucas drove his shoulder into the attacker, sending both of them into the dining table.
Pamela screamed.
Gregory moved toward the injector.
Walter caught him.
“Do not.”
The impostor reached the back entrance before the estate’s private gate system locked automatically.
Walter had activated it from the hidden phone.
She turned, breathing hard.
Without Evelyn’s controlled expression, the resemblance remained extraordinary but imperfect. Her jaw was slightly narrower. A faint scar crossed her neck.
“Who are you?” Lucas asked.
She laughed.
“Ask Evelyn.”
The federal contact Walter called arrived with independent agents. They secured the woman but did not announce a final arrest or charge.
Her fingerprints identified her as Miriam Shaw.
Evelyn’s younger sister.
Official records said Miriam died in a house fire twenty-four years earlier.
Hawthorne Rest listed her as an active identity specialist.
The facility did not merely create false documents.
It trained living doubles.
Relatives with similar features.
Patients altered surgically.
Actors conditioned through memory scripts.
Miriam had replaced Evelyn several times over the years without Walter noticing.
The real Evelyn’s live feed continued from the van. Derek sat beside her, glancing repeatedly toward the camera.
He appeared frightened.
The silver suitcase rested on the floor between them.
Miriam refused to reveal where the van was heading.
Walter opened the old correspondence between himself and Evelyn.
Subtle differences appeared in messages sent during certain months. Different punctuation. Different legal advice. Different attitudes toward Gregory.
Miriam had helped delay the trust transfer to Lucas.
She had also discouraged Walter from investigating Hawthorne.
Yet some of “Evelyn’s” actions protected him.
One double may have been working against the facility.
Lucas asked Miriam directly.
“Why did you leave the floorboard documents intact?”
She looked at Walter.
“Because the old man finally became useful.”
Walter smiled without warmth.
“You wanted me to expose Gregory.”
“I wanted everyone watching the family instead of Hawthorne.”
The Vale conspiracy was a distraction inside a larger operation.
While Gregory, Rachel, and Derek fought over Walter’s trust, Hawthorne moved patients, erased records, and prepared new identities.
The silver suitcase contained not only family documents but master access codes stolen from Hawthorne’s Boston archive.
Derek planned to sell them.
That was why the van took him willingly at first.
When he realized they intended to keep the codes and erase him, he sent Walter the live feed.
Derek was not becoming honest.
He was choosing the side most likely to save him.
The video shook as the van turned.
Through the rear window, Lucas saw a hospital sign.
ST. CATHERINE’S MEMORY CENTER.
Nathan recognized it.
The hospital treated stroke patients and dementia cases. Its basement archive connected to Hawthorne’s private network.
The van entered an underground garage.
Evelyn spoke quickly.
“They need Walter’s biometric key to open the archive. The silver suitcase only carries half the code.”
Walter looked at his hand.
The signet ring Eleanor wore upstairs contained the other half.
Eleanor had removed it and placed it on the table.
Miriam stared at the ring.
“They’ll come back for that.”
Walter closed his fist around it.
“No.”
The hidden phone vibrated again.
A camera inside St. Catherine’s showed Derek pulling the real Evelyn from the van.
The administrator waiting for them turned toward the lens.
Lucas recognized her.
She was the hospice nurse who had cared for the woman he believed was his mother fifteen years earlier.
