Chapter 1

Husband Prioritizes His Mistress’s Child While His Own Son Seizes in His Mother’s Arms.

Claire Whitmore burst through the emergency entrance with her five-year-old son limp against her chest.

Noah’s blue dinosaur pajamas were soaked with fever sweat. His head rolled weakly against her arm, and his small body tensed in frightening waves she could not stop.

“My son is seizing! Somebody take him!”

Her voice tore through the hospital lobby.

Nurses turned.

A security guard stepped aside.

An ambulance idled behind her in the Arizona daylight.

And then Daniel came in behind her.

Not carrying Noah’s medical bag.

Not shouting for their son.

He was carrying Lily Reed, Vanessa’s daughter, a conscious six-year-old in a lavender jacket who coughed against his shoulder while Vanessa hurried after them in tears.

Claire stumbled toward the intake desk.

Before the nurse could reach Noah, Daniel stepped past Claire toward the first open gurney.

“Lily goes first. Noah gets fevers all the time.”

The words froze Claire harder than fear ever could.

For one breath, she stared at her husband.

Then Noah’s body stiffened again.

Claire nearly collapsed, but two nurses rushed forward and lifted Noah from her arms.

“Pediatric emergency now!”

The gurney flew down the corridor.

Claire ran beside it, losing one sneaker near the entrance without noticing.

Oxygen mask.

Monitors.

Doctors calling instructions.

Cold hospital light replaced daylight.

Then Dr. Elena Marsh came out of the pediatric ICU with a face Claire would remember forever.

“The delay caused severe oxygen deprivation.”

Claire grabbed the wall before her knees gave out.

Daniel appeared at the far end of the corridor, pale now, empty-handed.

“Please… let me see my son.”

Dr. Marsh stepped directly in front of him.

“You’re too late.”

Daniel stopped.

Behind the glass doors, doctors moved around Noah’s bed in blurred urgency.

Claire looked at her husband and realized the emergency had not only taken her son through those doors.
