Chapter 5

Hospitals are trained to sort emergencies quickly.

But people can still contaminate the first seconds with confidence.

Daniel had confidence.

He carried Lily to the gurney and spoke like the adult in charge.

“She’s having trouble breathing.”

The triage nurse turned toward the child.

Then Claire screamed.

“My son is seizing! Somebody take him!”

The nurse looked at Noah.

Everything changed.

Another nurse ran from behind the desk.

A doctor called out for pediatric emergency support.

Daniel, still holding Lily, said the sentence Claire would hear in nightmares.

“Lily goes first. Noah gets fevers all the time.”

The nurse looked at him like she wanted to say something unprofessional.

Instead, she reached for Noah.

“Mom, give him to me.”

Claire could not let go.

For one irrational second, handing Noah over felt like failing him.

Then the nurse said, “I can help him faster if you let me take him.”

Claire released him.

Her arms felt instantly empty and wrong.

Noah was placed on a gurney.

The team moved.

Claire moved with them.

The corridor stretched into cold light.

A mask went over Noah’s face.

Someone placed sensors on his small chest.

Someone else secured an IV.

Claire’s right sneaker slipped off as she ran.

She did not stop.

“Mom, stay at his side but don’t block us,” a nurse said.

Claire nodded.

She would have agreed to anything that kept Noah moving.

Behind her, Daniel’s voice faded.

Vanessa’s crying faded.

Lily’s coughing faded.

The entire world narrowed to the wheels of the gurney and the terrifying stillness between Noah’s movements.

When they reached the pediatric ICU doors, Claire was stopped.
