Chapter 9

The corridor became a waiting room without chairs enough for grief.

Nurses moved past.

A child cried somewhere behind another door.

A vending machine hummed.

The ICU alarms rose and fell behind glass.

Daniel kept standing, sitting, standing again.

Each movement irritated Claire because it felt like performance now.

He wanted to be seen suffering.

Claire only wanted Noah seen breathing.

After another update, Dr. Marsh allowed Claire to look through the glass for a few seconds from the marked line.

Noah looked too small beneath the equipment.

Claire pressed both hands to her mouth.

She did not call his name.

She did not want to distract anyone.

She only stood there, giving him everything a mother can give when touch is not allowed.

Presence.

Daniel approached behind her.

“I need to see him.”

Dr. Marsh said, “Step back.”

“He’s my son.”

The doctor’s patience finally thinned.

“And he is a critical patient.”

Daniel looked at Claire.

“Please.”

Claire’s eyes did not leave Noah.

“You said he gets fevers all the time.”

Daniel flinched.

“I was wrong.”

“Yes.”

The word was not forgiveness.

It was fact.

Daniel’s voice broke.

“I can’t lose him.”

Claire turned then.

“You should have thought of that before treating him like an interruption.”

The hallway went silent.

Vanessa, still farther back, lowered her eyes.

Anna stood beside Claire like a wall.

Daniel looked destroyed.

But Claire could not rescue him from that destruction.

Noah was the child behind the glass.
